| Teach an Old Dog New Tricks? Hello, My adopted Yorkie is about 14 months, and has been paper trained by his original owner. He is doing a great job handling his business outside since I've had him (only about 4 days). He's only had one mishap, and that was on the kitchen floor, so it was easy clean up. How can I continue to get him to go outside on a regular basis? And, does he know what he's doing when he goes outside, or has it just been a good accident each time? It is going to be a big deal to switch to going outside? Thanks for any help beforehand! |

| Sounds like you are doing great!! I wish I could help and had some answers but, I am still working on training myself. (Not going so well either) Do you tell him the same phrase everytime he goes out like go potty or do your business? I think that is a good idea so they remember why they are outside. Good Luck!!!!

| Bunker wakes up to my father coming home from his graveyard shift, around 730 am, so I get up as well and take him out. I just carry him onto the grass and tell him "Go pee-pee, Bunker" and before I know it he's kicking dirt/grass onto his 'business.' I know i said pee-pee, but i guess it's universal for everything potty related. Good luck with Lily's training and thanks for the post! |

| I am so glad Bunker is so well trained. It makes life so much easier and he is actually still young so teaching outside won't be hard either. |

| Maggie is 4 months old and trained to potty outside. Your baby should be very easy to train, since the bladder muscles are already strong. Take him outside (On A Leash) after meals, naps and playtime. Give him the word you want to associate with doing their business. I use PP and Potty. Repeat this word over and over, while you are outside. When they start doing their business, praise him verbally, using the bathroom command and their name. Take him immediately back inside for a treat. Lots of praise will work everytime. They love tiny pieces of cheese. We call it a "PP TREAT". Now Maggie rings a bell on our back door knob. Sure helps when you are in the other part of the house. I will go to her when the bell rings. Sure enough there she sits waiting for me. Good Luck. Hope this helped. Congratulations on your new family member.
