First, let me congradulate you on your adoption! Bun was adopted at three years of age and I suspect was paper trained (everthing he did gave me a good indication that he had never walked on a leash before and didn't quite know what to do outside). Teaching a dog to go outside who was previously paper trained isn't a whole lot different than teaching housebreaking from the begining. You are just teaching something new. So go back to the begining and use a crate, keep to a schedule and monitor how your dog does.
