| Inside vs outside potty training???? OK so I've searched a bit on here trying to see if there were already these discussions going on, but couldn't find one. So if this is a repeat I'm so sorry. I'm getting a yorkie pup in about a month and I think we would like to train him to go potty outside, but when we are at work we will have to keep him in a play area with a potty pad. Will this confuse him and not know if he should pee on the pad or outside? I'm just confused and want my new friend to understand where to pee. Any suggestions are welcome!!!! Thanks! |

| I am glad you posted this, as I was about to ask the same exact thing! We wont be getting our pup for another 7-8 weeks, but I am curious about training. Hopefully someone will post soon! |

| Well, I've had Meka for about three months. She's almost 6 mo now and she does use pee pads during the day (while at work) however, I try to take her out in the evening for a walk as well. Its whatever works for you. Im "cross training" her to go outside so that we/she can choose whats best for her as she gets older. There are sprays (petsmart) that helps them go, where u want them to (they work both indoors/out)... I find it helpful that she can go potty either way.... Hope this helps 8)

| At first I trained mine to go on potty pads but it was frustrating because they would miss and walk in it etc. So recently I started training them to go outside and it is going really well, much easier. I think its because they get the message more clearly as when your outside you can wait until they go before you go back in as opposed to being able to walk off the pee pad.

| Both are great, especially when it rains! I trained Max first to paper and then he just went outside one day - it took a while. Now we go for a walk every day so he gets to pee outside. He loves to pee in snow too.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | There is tons of info on YT regarding potty training - you can do a search (which the Search ink is on the blue tool bar). Izzy is 8 mos. and we are still about 50/50 - Yorkies take time to potty train so have patience. She is crate trained for sure; x-pen on pee-pads and working on bells for outside potty. Good luck and welcome to YT where you will learn a lot for sure.

| Peanut is 9 months now, and is pretty consistant with the potty pads. We lived in a second floor apartment, so going outside wasn't too easy. So we trained him inside.... Yorkies should be spoiled anyways Peanut always had potty pads. They can be super tough to train, but these days he makes it on the pad everytime, though he does catch the edge sometimes *note, Peanut WILL NOT pee pee on the pads if he has poopy on there, we must pick it up before he'll pee on the pad again! He's picky

| Thank you to everyone that relpied. That all really helps. I just went shopping today for the first time to buy all the things I will need. WOW I was overwhelmed. I had no idea there were so many different kinds of shampoo, potty pads, treats, food, pretty much anything I needed to buy I was overwhelmed. So I went to Barnes and Noble and bought the Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies book so maybe that will help me. I'm getting so excited already and I don't even get him until the end of September. Oh well, I guess I will be really prepared. Thanks again for everyones respones. |

| No it's good to teach them both. As you said sometimes you won't be able to be there, and your yorkie will need a place to go other then your floor.

| Yes thats the reason I first taught them to go on potty pads but now I am fortunate to be able to work from home and they are never left for more than an hour, so its not a problem |

| My situation is this: I work during the day so I plan to leave the puppy in my kitchen (with puppy gates) and have an area with a pee-pee pad. But when I am home I want the dog to go outside. Well, I can leave a puppy pad out all the time if I need to...but Id like for the dog to know to pee outside too. At night she will (probably) be in her crate. Is this going to be impossible to train?? I REALLY dont want to leave the dog in her crate all day, so I thought having the bigger area and puppy pad would be better. However, if it is going to be impossible to train then maybe I will have to keep her in the crate during the day... Anyone else do this? Am I making sense? Dolyn-I am not getting my puppy until the 2nd week of October, so I know what its like to wait! I am getting so excited though! |

| I didn't buy any food yet. I thought I would wait a few weeks then call my breeder and she was she is feeding them or what she suggests. Is there any type of treat or food that yorkies shouldn't have? |

| Re-potty training???? Hello everyone! on the potty-note, my little girl, Dorie, has been trained to go outside, because she would not use the potty padsindoors....I have recently gotten a new job so she will be inside more by herself...is there such thing as "re-training"? If you have done it, please share some helpful tips! Thanks! |
