Question For anyone that uses belly bands please

We have just fairly recently started using the bands and while I might say that it has made life so much more pleasant for both Teddy and the rest of the house I do have a few questions for those of you that have used them for a while.

When we get up in the morning Teddy goes outside until he pees and poos. As soon as he comes in he gets on his "pants" and goes to eat. I set the timer on the stove for 30 minute intervals all day so he is out every 30 minutes. Sometimes if he is asleep or something I will put it off until he wakes up but for the most part I am pretty on top of tht 30 minute thing all day. He gets a treat each time he does something outside and as soon as he comes in he gets his pants back on.

BUT

No matter how often he goes out he pees in those pants EVERY time. I know he is able to hold it as he hold it all night and for hours when we are out somewhere. So what gives????

Does anyone elses baby do this and does anyone have any suggestions as to how to break it?

I love using them as it gives him freedom in the house and me peace of mind. I love that I don't have to get angry and he doesn't have to be confined but in a perfect worls I would much prefer that this just be a steeping stone to better things and that he won't have to live in these things the rest of his life. I refuse to let a potty issue ruin my babies chances for a happy home so if he has to live in them forever he will but if you can help us work out of them I would greatly appreciate it!

Also, I must obviously be using the wrong pads in them as they leak onto the band quite often. All suggestions there are welcome as well!

Thanks,
Kim and Teddy!

It sounds like either they're too snug, or he's being stimulated, OR he needs to have his water intake decreased. You're letting him out so frequently, so I don't think that's an issue. But check all of the above and make sure the band isn't too snug and water him on a schedule rather than allowing him to drink freely until he's a bit older and the housebreaking is better underway/he's more developed.

If all else fails, maybe try a long t-shirt that covers his "unit" instead of a belly band. The broader fabric touching most of his body and not just his unit and that are might be what he needs to be less stimulated.

Use adult incontinence pads instead of feminine hygeine ones. They hold the urine better. I use Options (available at Walmart). I buy the maximum long and cut them into thirds. The only pain about them is that they have little granules in them that you will find on your counter top...BUT they work so much better!

I use the incontinence pads also.

How old is Teddy? many puppies are just piddlers, they will outgrow it. I'm wondering if the belly bands won't delay the house training. part of the training process is to catch them making a mistake to you can correct it.

JMO it is like tryhing to potty train a toddler while they are in diapers or pullups. You don't know when they have wet themselves so you can correct it.

Mu siggestion wouild be to use the belly band sparingly. I only use it when I allow them in the carpeted are of the house. Plus mine have a doggie door, so he goes in and out as he pleases and if he has a belly band on then he is always wetting in it.

I just bought the Options ones at Walmart also. They are great! (Much better than the maxi type pads I hadbeen using.) I used the whole thing, though. If you cut them does it leak out the cut end? I know maxi pads do. But If the Options don't I would like to try cutting them because they don't fill the whole thing.

Bobbi has been in belly bands since he was 12 weeks and is 8 months now. I use poise pads and thick bands.

He sleeps with it and when he is not in his pee-proof room

He goes out and does his business..........I too have noticed he will wet his pad. He drink lots of water........and I don't want to restrict it though. He pees like a waterfall.........so many times a day....lol

The pads do not leak if you change them often. Just experiment with the size needed. The only annoyance is that the little granules are a mess. Don't try to wipe them off a counter with water.....they get sticky because they absorb it.

As for housetraining. I take the belly bands off of them when they go out and put them on in the house. Eventually they get the idea. Usually as they get older, their little legs are lifted and you can catch them then. I never say NO..I simply say outside and take them outside. No is not a good word for training in my opinion.

As for the doggy door...that is an entirely different topic. I might start a thread on it...very dangerous thing in my opinion. Invites thieves into your yard, not to mention other animals into your home. Again...just my opinion. I never leave my babies unattended.

Jessie, that sounds like it's exactly part of your problem.
Don't overwhelm his kidneys. Don't get me wrong, it's great to offer him fresh water and so on, but withholding it, just like w/ a child that has potty training issues, doesn't mean that he still won't be getting enough. It'll just be on a schedule so you can control when he has to pee and when he doesn't.

Your call, just thought I'd offer my two cents.

Thanks! Great info all around. I think I will start with the tightness of the bands. I make them myself and have made them all quite snug because it seemed when they weren't they would sip around and not stay in place. So, I'm going to start there and see what happens!

Be back with more after we play with that alittle

I believe having him go out too frequently (30 min. intervals) is too much. . . you need to get him to learn to hold his pee Have you tried crating him? Tiger can hold his pee pretty good but he does wear a band when he roams free, only because he gets very, very excited and will just pee whenever he feels like it. But, if he has his morning relief (pee or poop) he does not mess up his pad when he is in the bedroom running around like crazy. . . he won't go again until lunch time when I come home . . .of course I had to train him though as this just doesn't happen overnight.
