Bag training! I need some help on trying to train Bella to go out in a carrier. Sorry this is so long! I went out x-mas shopping this weekend and thought we would give it a try. I did not think she would mind the bag at all since she loves her crate and loves people. Well boy did I think wrong. I borrowed a bag from my mom (who used to be able to carry her yorkie around in it until she got too big), well we went into the department store and she was okay for a couple minutes, then she started barking when she would her something and then she kept trying to get out of the bag. It has a zipper and another little place if youwant to unzip it for their head to peek out. My mom and I were trying to keep her in the bag that she was so desperately trying to escape, and we ended up getting her hair caught in the zipper she was crying, it was a total disaster. We had to take her to the car and leave her in her carrier. I really want to be able to take her out with us, and I have taken her into Lowes and a couple other places but I have always held her and she does fine. I asked for the Coach doggie carrier for x-mas and I guess I need to figure out if she is going to be able to do it before my husband spends that much on the carrier. Please help me with any training advice!

We had the hardest time with Starr before I found out what to do. Hopefully this will work as well for you, Coach is my fave and I'd love to see you get that bag for Christmas Leave the bag on the floor, unzipped. Put a favorite treat in there. Let her go in there on her own. It may take a few days. Once she's going in there on her own let her do that for a few days. Then, start picking the bag up and just carry her around the house a little, with it unzipped, watching to make sure she doesn't jump out. Then sit the bag down and let her hop out. Do that for a few days. Then try zipping the bag and letting her hang her head out, and use the harness clip in there. Then after a few days of that, graduate to having the whole thing zipped up, and reward her with a treat when she sits in it quietly. She'll get the hang of and and even look forward to it once she realizes that she's going to get to go bye-bye with Mommy in it Just take it slowly, and one step at a time. Of course she freaked out, she'd never been in a carrier before, right? Poor thing A full day of shopping might be too much at first, just try short errands at first, that way if she's not doing well, you can take her home. Good luck I hope this helped a little

My advice, as in all training is.... Don't start with the end result. Training is a process which, for the most part includes many baby steps, each one building upon the other. LunasMomma gave some FANTASTIC advice. I would add, go slow -- sometimes you can reach the goal faster by going slow. Give Star to be completely and entirely comfortable with each step before proceeding to the next. I love the idea of leaving the carrier on the floor with a treat inside. I would add one step inbetween picking it up and carrying it around -- I would sit on the floor beside the carrier and lift the carrier into my lap -- don't force her to stay inside, but if she chooses to, then praise her like there is no tomorrow. If she jumps out, then just quietly put her back inside the carier and try again. Then lift the carrier and put it back down on the floor. Continue until you can just lift the carrier from the floor to your lap with you sitting on the floor. Then do the same thing from the floor with you standing up.... Once Starr is comfortable with that.... then try walking around the house a bit -- Always be sure that she is completely and entirely comfortable with one step before moving on to another. If at any point she gets nervous, then drop back to the previous step and do some more reinforcing.

This is great advice. With Molly it took a few months before she was comfortable. Sometimes it was two steps forward and 1 back. She got the idea and loves the bag now. If it is out her little nub start to wag cause she knows she is going. Just take your time it is worth it!

I want to add that there are a lot of people that will break a car window in a heartbeat for a yorkie. Never leave them in a car when you can't see the car. There was an incident maybe it was last week, where a lady said she was only gone in a store 10 minuts, came back, and her dog was gone.

If they will break into your car after some bags they have no idea whats in them....they'll sure break in for a dog as expensive as a yorkie. |
