| Arrrrrggghh!!!!!! Lindsey is about 3 mo old now and I am having the worst time with potty training and I dont know what to do. She will pee on her pee pads for the most part, but she will poop pretty much anywhere she pleases-and then proceeds to stomp all over it. Last night, my 6 year old daughter was holding her and she actually pooped on her lap!! She even poops in her crate. I bought some of those velcro panties at petsmart, and she wiggles out of them. I am getting so frustrated. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

| She is still too young to understand. Lexy is 15 weeks today and is just now starting to go to the pads to poop. She still is going pee and poop on the floor about a third of the time. Just keep at it and be patient with her. If she goes in her crate, maybe you should try a small crate for training. Just a thought. Good luck!! |

| Poor Lindsey and your daughter. Lindsey really had to go badly to poop on your daughter. When you take her out, do you want until she goes potty before you bring her back inside every time? Or do you time them out and if she doesn't potty after awhile, you just give up and take her back inside? Is she on a strick potty schedule. Consistancy is the key to potty training. Are you really consistant? You have more than 1 dog in the family. Sometime owners are less strick or consistant with the puppy because they expect the puppy to behave like the old dog that is already housetrained. Sometimes the puppy will pick up potty training from the older dogs but owners shouldn't expect it. Why is she pooping wherever she please? Is she free to roam anywhere she like when you are home? Are you keep a good eye on her when she is roaming around. Keep in mind Lindsey is still a puppy. Like a baby she has to have supervision at all times. I just find it weird that she did it on your daughter. So what do you think is her major problem? |

| I agree that routine and consistency is a big help and a consistent feeding schedule. She's still very young. If she goes even sometimes on the pee pee pads.....pat yourself on the back! Dogs are like children in that they thrive on routine and consistency. Our adult dogs do really well if we stay on routine but if we get off of it they will surely have an accident in the house. Keep at it and she will get it. I read somewhere a while back, I think an article in our local newspaper, that puppies bowel system and urinary tract aren't fully developed enough to "hold it" or go potty on demand until they are somewhere in the neighborhood of six months old and that patience is key.

| I can't give advice since I am HORRIBLE at potty training (not strict enough) but today has begun my "get tough" scheme and here is what I am doing: Tia (5 MONTHS - so you're already ahead of me!) pretty much goes wherever she pleases, which is MY fault for giving her the run of the house when I shouldn't. I decided to put her on her leash today to make sure I know where she is and what she is doing AT ALL TIMES. So far, she hasn't gone pee, she is sleeping beside me as I type, but I am taking her to her pee-pad every 45 minutes. (I've put the pad outside since I figure I should train her to go there since Sandy is going out too) If I can't keep her with me, she goes in her crate (she did when I took my son to school) I am hoping with a major change in my commitment to training and consistancy I will be able to undo all the damage I have done. Well, that's my plan of action anyway!

| Jack at 6 months has finally got the hang of things. (I hope I am not bragging too soon). When we are at my store, he is behind the counter with me, and has a gate to keep him in, he paws at me when he has to pee so I take him outside and he does his thing. At home he uses a peepad or his wizdog in the laundry room to pee, but still has a problem with pooping in the bathroom, I guess he gets a "whiff". Have patience, he was absolutley awful until about a month ago. I had to replace a area carpet, but only because I was too lenient with him and he has the run of the house.

| Hi Everyone, I'm new here. My new baby doesn't arrive until mid-May, but I'm spending a lot of time reading the threads here (as opposed to doing what I really should be doing). Who knew I would ever spend so much time reading about potty training. He will be 16 weeks when I pick him up and I am so hoping the training goes easily. All the different threads on potty training makes me remember that I'm going to be losing some sleep for a while. It's been so long since I've potty trained a puppy. Julie |

| Hi Krishna's Mom! Welcome to the board! I know how you feel about potty training a pup. I too, haven't had to do this for many years and am nervous about it also. I won't be getting my Yorkie until July, so I've got some time but, I plan on keeping my eye on the pup at all times and hope this will drasticly shorten the training time. I know I'm probably just hoping for too much, oh well. Good Luck to you!

| It sounds like your little Lidsay is doing pretty good for her age. They will usually let you know by squirming if you are holding them and they have to go. Was your daughter holding her for a while when that happened? Had she pooped recently or eaten? Anyway, everyone has gien you great advice and I think you should be encouraged that she is doing as well as she is with the pee part. For, that's the hardest to clean up. Krishna's Mom: WELCOME!!! |

| Everyone has given you great advise. For Potty training to work you need to be consistent and patient. Praise her when she does uses the pads correctly. If you see her sniffing like when she is going to potty take her to the pad. Remember Lindsay is only 3 months give her time. You need to work with her but she will get it. Good luck. |

| Everyone is giving great advice. I've read not to expect too much in the potty training area until they are at least 5-6 months old. Before that age their little bodies just aren't developed enough to hold it well. The same source also stated that a yorkie may not be trusted to have free roam of the house until 18 months of age. My wonderful yorkie, Oscar, is 5 1/2 months old and still has a ways to go in the potty training area |
