| Potty training question My yorkie male (Gator) 5mths and my Griffon male (Booger) 4mths are currently staying in seperate fold down crates during the day. I go home at lunch to let them out and they do good at holding it till noon, then I get home at 5 and most times they go on their towels. I was putting puppy pads in the crates and they would just chew them up, so I put towels in their and they use them at times to potty, plus they play in their water. Whew, question is, does anyone put their pups in dog carrier crates during the day, with just enough room to turn around and stretch out, or is this no good? They sleep in carriers at nite and never use the bathroom in them, but then they are asleep. What do you think?

| I have the same issue. I figure time will solve the problem. I too come home at lunch--delited to see a dry towel and crate but usually by the time I get home at 5 she has peed and pooped and trampled all over it--uuuughhh!! I tried a play pen too but she too chewed up the pad and peed and pooped on the floor and then it was difficult to clean up my floor ( has lots of groves etc in it) so I decided to just go back to the crate and coming home to let her out. I work with someone that had this exact same problem and she is saying that hers is getting better and is holding it in the crate. Her puppy is now about 8 months old and just started getting better. I'm just holding out hope that in time it will get better. We have to keep in mind that because the yorkies are so small--so are their bladders. My vet said don't expect much until they are a year old. Good luck to us! |

| Loki is a bigger yorkie (full grown almost 10 pounds at 1 1/2 yrs old) and I don't expect him to hold it for 5 hours now, let alone when he was 5 months old. He could hold it 2-3 hours at that age. Also, don't put the pee pads in the crate. That's defeating the purpose of crate training. If you want to pee-pad train them, then do that. If you want to outside train them, then do that. But don't put pads in the crate - that just teaches them to pee in their crate! You also may need to remove the towels - we did. Loki would pee on it and then push it to the side. Once we took it out he stopped going in there (unless we left him too long, of course). What's happening is that they are sleeping until noon. Then they get an hour of exercise or whatever but they aren't sleeping all afternoon. Plus you probably give them food/water when you come home, right? You have to wear them out sufficiently so they sleep all afternoon too, and i wouldn't hurt to have someone let them out in the afternoon.

| Thanks for the responses. I have taken the peepad out but I do have towels in there for them to lay on. I do leave food down till noon and then just water for the remainder of the day. I know they will do better as they get older and we love them enough to have as much patience as is needed. Thanks again for the feedback.
