| heeling Hi, I have had several dogs and all of them were larger than my Yorkie. I took them all to training classes that used a training collar to train them. It has always worked wonderfully and never hurt the dogs. My question is - since I can't use one on a Yorkie's tiny neck, how do I teach her to heel? I don't want to use a clicker - the noise drives me crazy. Any suggestions? Thanks, omega |

| I use a collar on my Yorkie when I take her outside - only to pee - or when I'm doing close up work with her. She always wears a harness when we go for longer walks and especially when she's outside playing on a much longer leash. This is when she runs and is at the end of her leash before she even knows it. You could train her to heel in the house with a collar - I would think then that she might do the same thing wearing a harness when you go outside for longer walks. Carol Jean |

| Omega - if you don't mind if I ask, what kind of "training collar" do you mean? Joey learned to heel using a harness.

| From what I've read, if you keep a "tight leash", the dog automatically thinks it HAS to PULL. If you try to keep a "loose leash", it will be less apt to pull on the leash. That's what we're working with Missy now. Good luck!

| re:heeling What I mean by training collar is what some people call a choke chain. Most training classes use them, but obviously they can't be used on a Yorkie. We're working on taking little walks around the yard and most of the time I let her lead so she can get used to the leash more. Sometimes I put a leash on my belt loop and the other end on Tinka and go about doing yard work or whatever. She loves it cause I'm not out of her sight!! She has a collar on most of the time but has a harness for when she out longer. I may just be impatient but the harness is such a hassle to get on when you're in a hurry. Anyone have an extra easy one to use? omega Last edited by omega; 04-11-2006 at 04:18 AM. Reason: forgot something |

| We trained cash to heel on his harness.... you can still snap the leash to get his attention, and not hurt his neck or harm him...

| heeling Thanks for the good advice. No, I would never put a training collar on her! That's why I was asking for alternatives. I do have a harness for her and am going to buy a better one soon - when I make up my mind which kind I want and how much to spend. I'm glad it's warmer out now. It makes potty training and leash training so much easier! Thanks again, omega |
