| More potty issues ... Pancake is 3 months and has been doing okay with the pads. I want to switch to taking her outside now that it is warmer up here in Canada. But the concern is that she gives me no indication that she has to go; except in the mornings she will whine to wake me up to take her to her pads, (I don't want the neighbors to see me in my PJ's!). I'm with her a lot, so when I see her sniffing around I take her outside. But I can't follow her around all day and I would like her to tell me she has to go. I read a lot of threads on using bells, I think I will try them. I'm just afraid she won't get it. The last thing is that she has only peed outside a couple times. She gets so excited chasing the leaves. I tell her to go pee (it works indoors and she knows she will get a treat), but she doesn't have any interest in me or anything I have to say while outdoors! So although I take her out to pee, we end up coming in to the pads 20 minutes later... How can I get her to 1. tell me she has to go and 2. get her to pee outside? Thanks for the help |

| I've had great success with the bell method for several dogs now. Just tie it on the door that you go through to go outside. It will ring naturally when the door is opened. It you want, you can give it an extra jingle to call the dog's attention to it. Some people force the dog to ring it, but I never did that. My pups figured it out quite quickly. Of course, using this method means that you have to be prepared to let them out when they want to go outside whether or not they have to potty! As far as teaching her to pee outside... are you sure you want her to change? Come cold weather in the fall, she may not want to go back to pee pads.

| Could you not put a pee pad outside where you want her to go and if she uses it start making the pad smaller each time untill she spills over to the site once the smell is there she may go. |

| Yeah, I read about taking the pads outside. That's a good idea, I'll try it for sure. She's my first pup. Hopefully after taking her out a few times she will get used to the idea of going outside. I'm sure then she will start to go by the door more often. I had an older dog when I was younger that would whine to let me know. Hopefully I will have some luck with the bells. Thanks for the suggestions! |
