| Potty Training Help! Hi! Im new to this board, and to yorkies. I just got a rescue puppy a week ago, and love him dearly! His name is Diesel. 5 months, 5 pounds. He goes everywhere with me (I work with a very modern company) and loves it. However, we are having trouble with potty training. I adopted him from a rescue (they got him from a puppy mill, reportedly), and when I picked him up, he was in an outdoor run with straw flooring/bedding. He doesnt seem to understand that outside is meant for potty breaks; when we go outside, he gets so caught up in the outdoors that he doesnt remember to potty, no matter how long we stay outside. It seems as though his need to potty hits him all of a sudden, and he has no control. I bought puppy pads, as it has been rainy and cold, but he doesnt understand that either. I always show him where to go, and if he pees or poops on the floor, I take him to the pad, but no progress. Any advice? Im very experienced with bigger breeds (my family breed rottweilers) but new to the toy breeds and their special needs. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! rachaelSTREET |

| Hello And Welcome To Yt! Try your hardest to get him to outside and when he does praise him! Usually wee wee pads are introduce in a smaller area. That way they can't help but go on them. Good Luck.

| I had the same problem with Aggie. Our backyard is enclosed and small (or so I thought). Whenever we set her out there, she'd sniff around, eat grass, eat barks, etc. As soon as she came in, she'd pee on the carpet. I decided to purchase an exercise pen and circle it in front of our backyard door. Basically, when she goes out, she only has 3 ft by 3 ft of space, which, is plenty! She'd sniff around, find her spot and pee! That's for the outside. As for the inside, we have our laundry room for her. Again, it's not a BIG, OVERWHELMING space for her that she'd forget to do her business. I place a pee pad in the corner. She'd walk around, sniff, sniff, and pee. Sometimes she'd miss. Sometimes, she'd hit the pad. Whenever she hit the pad, I praise her like crazy. But, when she didn't, I don't make a fuss OR any noise. I simply clean it up. Soon enough, she learned to pee on that pad. Try that for a couple of weeks and see if he'd make any improvements. Good luck! |

| Potty training has to be the hardest thing ever!! Meeko refuses to poop outside. It doesn't matter if its at a dog park (and others are doing it) or if its in a friend's backyard (she also has two dogs who do it there) or even out on our balcony. He will go pee pee on the pad on our balcony, but then comes right in and runs over to the inside "emergency" pad and poops. What gives? His over all potty training is only going so so. I work with him on this all the time. When I am at work, he is crated. Once I get home, we run right out to the balcony and he pee pees almost immediately. However, on days I don't work, he pee pees whereever he feels like it. I think some of it is marking but not all. He will SOMETIMES go to the indoor pad on his own. He doesn't give any signs that he needs to go, so it is hard for me to know. I watch the clock after eating and drinking and playing and we go out to the balcony. BUT he just sits there looking around. (My BF calls him a "looky loo".) He is usually good about pooping on the indoor pad. He at least starts out on it anyway. By the time he does his business, he is two feet away. But he tries. He does sometimes leave me little surprises in other locations, but since I don't see him doing it, I can't say much to him. Any help? |

| Cooper will not use wee wee pads to poop on but will pee pee on them. We have newspapers down and he will poop on it everytime. He also likes to pee pee on our pad that our computer chair sits on. Maybe try newspapers. Just a thought. |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Miss Abigail (4 months) is, I'd guesstimate, 99% trained to the newspaper. We have Potty Party everytime she's successful. Lots of praise and hands-on reinforcement: "Yaaaaaaay! We pee-pee'd/pooped on the paper!" She just wriggles with delight. When the weather settles down here in VA, I'll take her outside. Can't wait!!

| Hi and Welcome to YT. As for potty training. It takes three things. Patience patience patience. If you've ever potty trained a child you will know. Confine to a small area when not being supervised. Put pee pads where HE decides he wants to go. When he gets to hitting the pad 99% of the time, slowly move it toward where you want him to go, or toward the door if you want him to go outside. Ollie will squat as soon as I put her down outside but she is so quick she never finishes so when I bring her back in she finishes. When the weather warms up I'll be able to stay out longer with her. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Potty Training Help!! Ok my Lex is almost five months. We have had him for three weeks now. I am a bit frustrated because when he came he would 95% go on the pad. Poo on the floor about 50% of the time and the other 50% on the pad. I have been taking him out and he will do both outside. But inside he will still sneak off here and there and pee on the floor or poo in two areas. I tend to clean up after him with Nature's Miracle pet stain remover and then mop as well where the area is but for some reason he will still do it in that spot. Any suggestions? I know I have heard that housebreaking takes time and all that good stuff but it seems at times that he is regressing. Do you think it's possible that the stain remover is not really cleaning up the spot? If so then do you have any other cleaning fluid that you recommend? Thanks...

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | I don't know about other products; but, I'm a bleachaholic. Accidents on the floor - wipe or pick up - then spray with diluted bleach. On carpet - wipe or pick up - then, vinegar and water. I'll try the Odorban, too! :

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Potty Training Help! From what I have read the Nature's Miracle, Odorban and Out are the same. They are just different names because of where they are marketed and the manufacturer. I am trying some vinegar and water now to see if that works better. I would love to do bleach and water but that will be too harsh on the wood floors. Thanks.
