| Success I have been training little Chance to ring the bell when he needs to go out to potty. He is catching on really well . One thing, I know that he is still young but at night he sleeps in a crate. Every night he poops in his crate . We take him out last thing at around 10:00pm. Last feeding is around 6-7pm. He does not poop at 10:00pm and poops in the kennel at night we get up around 5 - 5:30am he usually poops then to. How old before he can hold it from 10 to 5? I have to say that his kennel is in another room from me. I keep him and my older boy in a room together with thier kennels. |

| Try feeding him earlier. Or walking him. (Loki cannot hold it for a walk - even if he's just gone in the yard he will squat on way and something will come out. We never walk without multiple poop bags!) Or, just set an alarm for 1am and let him out then. Some combination of that should eliminate the pooping in the crate. Eventually he will either begin to tell you he needs to go by crying (Loki would bang on his crate) or he will just hold it. It could be until he is 6 months old (or older) before it gets better. Also, could his crate be too big?

| I agree with Erin she gave you great advice. I also think you can try to feed him a little earlier. We free feed our yorkies and I find they poop once in the morning after eating and do another one at about 5 or 6 in the evening. |

| Does the Science Diet have corn in it? I know corn can cause a lot of excess pooping! Also, Natural Balance Ultra Premium has good ingredients, but we had some problems with it (every dog is different). We switched to Canidae and LOVE the results. Others worth trying are Wellness, Innova and California Natural. Merrick also makes dry food - and their wet food just got dog food of the year! Just a suggestion!!

| Diarrhea. I don't know if it was caused by the NB or if the Canidae just works so much better because of the pro-biotics in it. Loki used to get diarrhea every 2-3 weeks for a few days at a time, even if we didn't give him anything different - but almost immediately if we gave him a new treat (even if only a bite). Anyway, I give Loki things now that would always set him off before - cheese, potato, bully sticks... and he's fine. Not a single DAY of diarrhea since we started him on it last September. We still carefully watch what he eats, but he's improved 100%.

| How do you train with the bells. What do you do to get them to know that you want them to ring the bells when they need to go? I would really like to know so I can give this method a try. |

| Well I got some bells at petsmart and i tied them to a piece of yarn. Long enough for his nose to be able to touch it. I tied it to the handle on the door that we take him outside. The first week he was here everytime I took him outside (which was alot) we walked to the door I took his paw and hit the bells and said outside. Then he went outside and I said "go potty" when he went potty lots of praise. I spent one day taking his paw hitting bell ...when he hit the bell good boy...lots of praise. When he went and hit the bell himself i gave him lots and lots of praise but immediately say outside and open the door. Then straight to do his business and back in the house. He has only been with us about 3 weeks but he is consistantly hitting the bell to go out. Now the tricky part is now that he also know that the bell mean the door opens and i can go mess around outside. So he is ringing the bell alot...but you have to be consistant and never scold for ringing the bell. Now when he rings the bell we go out and potty straight back into the house no playing. It is really easy the hard part that we are in is teaching him the bell means potty not go outside and play. You can also search this there is alot of info out there on how to do it. |

| I am going to try the bell too. Max has finally mastered going outside. I keep him in a playpen for 75% of the day. He sleeps and takes naps in his crate. I take him out for play time about 3 times through out the day. He now whines when he has to go out. The real key that I learned here was the lots of praise and even a little treat. I too used the "Outside" and "Go Potty" phrases and good golly they work. I have only had him for a week but so far he has caught on real quick. Today I am going to get that bell and rig it up to start teaching him. I hate the fact he has to be in his playpen most of the day but I love the fact he's not messing up the house. Thanks for the advice on the bell |
