| Peeing in crate I know this has been posted several times, but when I searched the threads about this topic, I really did not get an answer I was looking for. My little one pees in his crate every single time we put him in there. He is a little over 4 months old now, and we have kept him in a crate since the very beginning when we got him. We have never kept him in there more hours than the age he is in months. (i.e. 2 hours at 2 months, 3 hours at 3 months, etc.) Now, at 4 months, he stays in the crate from 8:30am to around noon, then he is out for at least an hour during lunch (if not all afternoon), and then back in his crate in the afternoon for at most 3 hours until we get home from work. Then he is out for the rest of the night, and he sleeps in the bed with us. He does not seem to mind the crate, but he pees every time he is in there. I KNOW we are not keeping him in there too long...he is 4 months old and we never keep him in there more than 3 to 3.5 hours. We have the absolute smallest crate that we can find. We do not feed or let him have water during the day, thinking that would help prevent the accidents, but that hasn't worked either. We ALWAYS take him outside to potty before we put him in the crate. When he is not in his crate, he is 100% potty-trained...he hasn't had an accident in the house in I don't know how long. We have tried putting food in there, thinking that he won't go potty where he eats, and that hasn't worked either!!! I know that the breeder kept him in a cage...he was only taken out twice in order to go to the vet. I have heard that dogs that are raised in cages don't know any better because they have always gone potty where they live. Will he ALWAYS pee in his crate?? Will he just grow out of it?? Or, is there something I could do differently?? The only thing I can think of is that we keep a towel in the bottom of the crate for comfort. When he goes potty, he covers the potty up with the towel; therefore, he is not inconvenienced by it. Should we leave the towel out so he will be inconvenienced when he goes to the bathroom in there?!! The only thing that bothers me about that is that the potty will get all over him (bc there is nothing to soak it up) and we will have to give him a bath everytime he does this...and I don't want his skin to dry out. If he does go on himself once or twice will he stop?? I don't want to leave him in a bathroom, x-pen, etc. with a pee pad bc I don't want him to think it is ok to go potty anywhere but outside. AND, I want him to be crate-trained bc we travel a lot. ANY advice/suggestions/etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. Has anyone else had this problem?! Sorry my post is so long.... |

| I know it sounds absolutely awful, but don't put ANYTHING in the crate. No towel, no blanket, NOTHING to soak up his pee. It is annoying to have to bathe him everytime. Go and invest in a bottle of waterless bath. You can find it at any petstore. That way you don't have to give him a full bath. By standing in it, he'll realize, "oh....this sucks and mommy won't come and clean it up as soon as I do it....maybe I shouldn't do this."

| oh wow, waterless bath?? I have never heard of that. Wookie does this too. He is on his way to being potty trained but he always pees in his crate no matter what I do. But he does have a pee pad in there that soaks it up.. or he will hike his leg up and pee right outside of the crate? Whats that all about??? |

| I am no expert and so my basis for giving advise is based on experience from only one puppy (my Tiger) and from books I have read. First of all, determining the number of hours he is able to hold his bladder has nothing to do with age (2 hours for 2 months, 3 hours for 3 months etc.). I say this because Tiger is only a little over 4 months old and he is able to hold his bladder for up to 6 1/2 hours. He has not soiled his crate since I got him at 8 weeks old. So, I think that to properly crate a puppy, determine how long he can hold it and use that as a starting point. I have mentioned this in another thread but what the heck . . .I can retype it again to help out a YT member. If your puppy can only hold it for 2 hours, then do that for a week and then increase it by 1/2 hour increments every week. You are actually training his bladder but it has to be gradually. Also, I have read that dogs will not wet the area where they sleep in, unless in your case his bladder could no longer hold it so he did not have any choice. Since he has already done it many, many times, spraying it with petenzyme or any type of pet odor remover will not take it out the smell. No matter how much clean-up you do, the smell (one that only dogs can smell) is retained forever so he will continue to do so again, and again, and again. No amount of cleaning, whether you bleach it or use strong cleanser will eliminate that smell. I hate to say this but I suggest you get a new crate and start all over. Hope this helps. |

| How big is the crate you are using? They do best if the crate is small. If it is too large, they will sleep in one corner and eliminate in the other. Just a thought!

| Reuger used to poop in one end of his crate. When I checked into crate training I found out that they only need enough room to sleep and turn around in. I took a small box and put it in the back of the crate and, it worked! No more pooping in the crate. It sounds mean to leave them so little space, but as Reuger has gotten bigger I've enlarged his space, and no more problems. Hope this helps!!

| Thanks SO much for all your responses. We have the absolute smallest crate that is made (we researched), and making the area smaller does seem like a good idea. I will give that a try. He has done well this past week with taking the towel out of the bottom...only one accident since last Wednesday!! I'll keep everyone updated. |
