Peeing in crate I know this has been posted several times, but when I searched the threads about this topic, I really did not get an answer I was looking for.
My little one pees in his crate every single time we put him in there. He is a little over 4 months old now, and we have kept him in a crate since the very beginning when we got him. We have never kept him in there more hours than the age he is in months. (i.e. 2 hours at 2 months, 3 hours at 3 months, etc.) Now, at 4 months, he stays in the crate from 8:30am to around noon, then he is out for at least an hour during lunch (if not all afternoon), and then back in his crate in the afternoon for at most 3 hours until we get home from work. Then he is out for the rest of the night, and he sleeps in the bed with us. He does not seem to mind the crate, but he pees every time he is in there. I KNOW we are not keeping him in there too long...he is 4 months old and we never keep him in there more than 3 to 3.5 hours. We have the absolute smallest crate that we can find. We do not feed or let him have water during the day, thinking that would help prevent the accidents, but that hasn't worked either. We ALWAYS take him outside to potty before we put him in the crate. When he is not in his crate, he is 100% potty-trained...he hasn't had an accident in the house in I don't know how long. We have tried putting food in there, thinking that he won't go potty where he eats, and that hasn't worked either!!!
I know that the breeder kept him in a cage...he was only taken out twice in order to go to the vet. I have heard that dogs that are raised in cages don't know any better because they have always gone potty where they live. Will he ALWAYS pee in his crate?? Will he just grow out of it?? Or, is there something I could do differently??
The only thing I can think of is that we keep a towel in the bottom of the crate for comfort. When he goes potty, he covers the potty up with the towel; therefore, he is not inconvenienced by it. Should we leave the towel out so he will be inconvenienced when he goes to the bathroom in there?!! The only thing that bothers me about that is that the potty will get all over him (bc there is nothing to soak it up) and we will have to give him a bath everytime he does this...and I don't want his skin to dry out. If he does go on himself once or twice will he stop??
I don't want to leave him in a bathroom, x-pen, etc. with a pee pad bc I don't want him to think it is ok to go potty anywhere but outside. AND, I want him to be crate-trained bc we travel a lot. ANY advice/suggestions/etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. Has anyone else had this problem?! Sorry my post is so long.... |
