| Getting pups to stand/sit Can someone give me tips on getting my dogs to stand or sit for pictures? I have 3, 1-7mo & 2-4 mo. They are learning basic commands, but put them on a table for pictures and commands are out the window. They are unsure and scared but must learn to obey when put in different situations. They all do well on the floor, in the yard etc..but NEVER when placed up off the floor for pictures. I would really like to teach them to stay still for pics but don't know where to begin. With all the lovely pictures of pups here, please give me some ideas that worked for you with your dogs. Love the action shots I have of the group, but would like to progress to "pretty" pictures. HELP????For I am doing something really REALLY wrong!!

| Put one up on your counter....have them sit and the the command stay....Start with just a few seconds, 2 or 3..if they move, just sit them back down for a stay command.......and treat and tell them how wonderful they are...in the beginning just for three or 4 seconds......lengthen the time.....and the key word is "stay" and be sure to treat. Of course many dogs are shy around others in unknown situations and we all know the dogs, that when the camera comes out, they just don't like it, but try and see if that works for you. |

| I agree with Yorkster. I've noticed that if you just get them comfortable with something. . . Honestly, I do things with my Yorkies, that I only allowed the cat to do. If I'm making coffee a lot of times either Rhapsody or Tiger is in my arms, and I just set whoever I'm holding on the counter. The first time I did this they were nervous, but I always had a hand on them, and now it's no big deal. They will just sit and watch as I get out the ingredients and set up the coffee maker. (btw: I clean my counters constantly, before and after every meal, lol). My computer desk also has a blanket on one part of it, and they both take turns sitting up there while I'm on the computer. Like I said the first time they were nervous, but I just kept a hand on them gave them a chew, and by introducing more and more new things they are more relaxed when approached by the unknown. They've learned they can trust me, and follow my lead, if I'm comfortable and calm then they are. . . I hope this helps. Also during training we have to have one hand with a treat up against our left leg or side, and to save my back, when we are practicing I put a blanket on the kitchen table and walk them around the edge of the table by their leash, so I'm able to train them to stay right by my left side without walking hunchback, lol. . . You might want to try that till they are used to being set up on the table, and are comfortable with doing training stuff up there. Good Luck!

| Make sure you treat...they associate that with going up high! It can be a coffe table but it is better on a surface than the floor...does not give them any options of places to run off to! Stay is a good command if you go out the door. They really learn quite quickly. Sometimes I think it is us who need the training to train them rather quickly. |

| The best way to transfer commands to new places is just to practice. Whe we take Loki to a new place (a dog store, a friend's house, outside at the park) we work on simple commands he has down, so he can feel more comfortable and learn we are in control and also that SIT at home means SIT on the sidewalk. It's just a lot of practice :-) Also, a good way to work on STAY is when you are feeding them. Put them in a sit or down position and slowly lower the food bowl. If they get up, raise it back up, put them back in the position, start to lower again... etc. Make them learn they need to do what they are told until you release them (We say "OK") Obviously Loki's not trained perfectly and could never do those 10 minute down/stays they do in obedience trials or stay put if there is a major distraction - but he can do something simple like a 30 second stay for a picture or sit on the rug until I tell him it's OK to dive into his food. Sometimes I just do it randomly to practice - Loki follows me everywhere even if it's just to change a load of laundry. So a few times a day when I get up and he is laying near me I will ask him to STAY, go to the laundry room or wherever, and reward him when I get back. It took months to get to this point (and he had to learn the word first), but it's just a simple command you can work into your routine. This won't help you immediately, but I thought you might like some easy suggestions!

| Both my dogs have to "sit" and stay that way to get a treat. Their little butts have to be on the floor before they get their treat. Also, to keep them from thinking about jumping up to get their treat, I give it to them at a very low level - almost even with or lower than their mouth. Now, everytime they see a treat in my hand - they just sit down without my even telling them to. So - "sit" and "stay" are commands they know very well. They don't know much else!! They don't have a clue what the word "come" means - unless it's to their benefit. Carol Jean |
