Resource Guarding/Personal Space Issues? Need Help Sadie has always been docile and loving. When my parents came to stay with us for the last 2 months she suddenly started showing signs of aggression when you disturb her when she is sleeping or pick her up when she doesn't want to be. She never did this before the company came. I am wondering if she is "resource guarding" her personal space? If so, how do I stop this aggressive behavior? She usually only does it to someone else and remains calm with me. Will she go back to normal after the company leaves and her routine is brought back? I don't want her to continue to nip at visitors. I know you can't spank yorkies, so what form of punishment should I use when she does this? Unfortunately she is usually on the other side of the room and away from me when this happens. Any advice would be appreciated. I want her to go back to my cuddly harmless little girl. she is not too far gone yet, so I am sure we can turn her back around.

Some people cover the crate with a light blue cover on the back and side facing the visitor(s). Top can also be covered if there is any cold air coming into the crate -- window, fan, air duct -- to prevent it coming in on your baby. You can place a small bowl of kibble in it -- with a treat "hidden" in the bottom for extra special reward. You might find that she likes her new cave. Most dogs love to have a space away from everything. All of my service dogs must have a special place for their den. This is their private time place. Once your company leaves, you should not remove the crate but lock the door open so she can go in and out as she pleases.

Thanks. I will try that next time I have company. She seems to be okay right now that company has left. She did growl at me the other night when I was shuffling around in the lazy boy and she was trying to sleep, so I told her "no" and she stopped. I am finding that if I wake her up before I move my feet or whatever if she is on the chair with me, that she isn't upset. I think maybe I was just startling her from a dead sleep. Thanks for all the advice. I have her wire kennel that I used when she was a puppy so we will give that a go if I still notice her having issues. She does like to go be by herself in our bedroom if it gets too crazy, so maybe that will be her escape location.

Your room may be the very best place as long as she likes private time there already. Put her crate there with her toys in it so she gets the idea that she can use it at her pace. Keep water and pee pad with a pillow for her to rest on. May not even have to close the door if you start now. I would also have the cover so she is used to that and doesn't feel any thing bad is about to happen if it is just thrown over her when company comes. That way you will just have to move the crate to where you want her to go when she seems to be getting upset. LOVE and training go a long way with these little paw wrapping pups.
