Default First time Yorkie owner

Hi all,

I am pleased to join this forum after sneaking in and reading conversations all over. The advice and funny stories have allowed me to go ahead and adopt a 3 year old yorkie (and this breed wasn't even my first option when looking to adopt, it was poodles). But, I finally chose Sassy, a quiet loving girl who follows you around. I haven't even completed the adoption process yet, still have to do the home visit first. But, I anticipate no problems. I am looking for advice on how to introduce her to my home and family (a grandmother and my dad). I heard that the first few days are essential in terms of structure and obedience.

Thanks all,

Welcome to YT!!! The one thing that NO ONE can ever say about our membership is , "Those crazy people do not love their Yorkies!!!" You will be crazy just like the rest of us, as that baby girl wraps you completely around her little precious paw! Thank you for saving a beautiful, kind, devoted, loyal, pup from where ever you chose her from....you wont regret it!

I see you did not mention children being around...this is great for now....quiet, soft, relaxed time with the little lady is essential....that will gently and quietly introduce her into your family and environment.....I always like lots of cuddle time, holding, stroking, petting, soothing talk and reassurance.....a lot of noise and chaos and yelling and darting around is not very conducive to settling a new little lady into your home....
She is an adult, so her "quiet time" or "nap time" can be spent in a lap or beside someone on the sofa or chair....do be sure she has a comfortable little bed with a blanket she can dig around in and arrange just right, available to her in the room where the family sits together, in case she prefers a bed to nap in.....I always have dogs covering me....4-7 at any given time...in my recliner or in my bed, at my feet when I am here on the computer....they just all want to be right with you, a part of the family, not left out of anything!! If they can not be right on me or next to me, they want to be within eye sight....they have to be able to see me! That is just Yorkies, and yours will be no different!!! Congrats and I would like to suggest a GREAT book...."Yorkies For Dummies"is a fabulous book that you really need to have in your Yorkie Library! You will learn tons of information in that book and you will continue to look through it for reference for years to come! It is available on Amazon.com for about 12.00 - 14.00, and worth every cent!!!

welcome to YT, coming from an ex-Poodle lover / owner, glad YT changed your mind. Thank you for adopting an awesome breed, you will not be sorry. She will work herself into your heart before you know it..... I adopted a lil 2 1/2 boy 14 months ago, he'll be 4 y/o in a few weeks. He adjusted quickly to me and his new surroundings. His first day in his new home I let him free to check out his new home, I gave him a new name and I talked and talked to him using the new name. I didn't reach out to him, I let him come to me on his own time. He watched me like a hawk lol, every room I went into he followed. The first night he slept in my bed,not next to me but on a pillow close to me. The next day he needed a vet visit, we were in the exam room, the vet came in and Cody jumped into my arms, crawled up my chest and onto my shoulder like a patriot lol. The vet said "I can't believe how he's bonded to you already, you were meant for each other". I have been very fortunate in the fact that Cody accepted me and his new life in just 24 hours. I wish the same for you. It may not happen that fast for you, some take more time. I am sure with loving family she'll be comfortable in a short time. Please keep us posted on her adjust to her new family and life.

Welcome! I am also new here.

I was literally handed a 9 year old Yorkie and took it home (better than it going to the pound) by some people I am acquaintances of. We have mutual friends and go to a lot of the same things in our community so they knew it would have a good home. He has been with me about 7 weeks now.

What I can suggest is to bring the dog in and do your routine you are going to have with it right from the start. Is it crate trained? Have a crate ready. My Teek loves blankets, pick up a bunch of baby blankets and a couple throw size as well. Mine sleeps on my bed and then he has his own throw blanket he is covered with. He has a dog bed as well that I put on the couch when I am home and into his crate when I have to leave him.

Mine is so spoiled that he had no trouble at all adjusting to life in my house. He was in a house where the people were gone all day and he was kept in a small space. I gave him access to the 2 main rooms I am in all day with me. When he had earned it, he got access to the rest of the main floor of the house (except bathrooms). He earned it within about a week because he only pee'd on the floor one time, the day after I brought him home and then pooped the first time I let my teenage daughter watch him and she was busy putting on make up and didn't hear him go to the door. LOL

I honestly believe that if you love her she will adjust quickly. It won't be perfect, but it can be great! Almost every dog I have ever had belonged to someone else. Socialize her well. I started taking Teek everywhere I went from the very minute I got him (although I didn't go a lot of places the first 3 days because I didn't need to) and he loves to go everywhere with me.

He settled in really fast, and he got very attached to me.

Good luck and I hope she adjusts quickly. I asked Teek today "Where have you been all my life?" His response was to snuggle against me closer, I think he feels the same way. I hope you feel the same way in 2 months.

Default Passed home visit

Thanks everyone for the advice. I passed the home visit. The lady who came to do the home visit was really nice and she owns 6 dogs

I heard a little bit about my baby(Bella). Apparently, I'm the second adopter to pick her. The first woman who picked her did it to have a playmate for her first dog. Apparently, whenever the two dogs played, she always said no. Eventually, Bella got confused and refused to play with the other dog. She was with them for 6 months, then the woman said she didn't want Bella anymore because she wouldn't play with her dog. Very very sad....

And that's not even the end of it. The woman wanted to be involved with the rehoming process, but at every adoption event, she kept listing the so-called bad habits of Bella and scared off potential adopters. Eventually, the adoption agency cut her out of the adoption process and moved her to a different foster home.

As soon as I pay the pet deposit with my landlord, my baby is all mine.

Now to go shopping for pet supplies....yay

Almost forgot. She said she fed her dogs Science Diet for small breeds. I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about it. Good or bad reviews?

It's been awesome. I feel like i've had her forever. I just gave her a bath about an hour ago, and she was such a dear. I used the yorkie splash and shine sample package that was suggested by one of the members here, and I love it. She smells so good and she's so soft.
I've given her a nickname - wigglebutt. she wiggles her butt and dances when i walk in from work. I just love.

So glad to hear that it's going well with Luna!! I feel the same way about my two yorkie puppies too. That is so funny that you call Luna wigglebutt. I call my Little Miss Elliot, wiggleworm because when she sees me, she wiggles her whole body up and down and is so happy.

Wigglebutt!!!! I love it!!!!!

Mine paws the air like crazy as soon as I come home (or if I have been out of the room for more than 2 minutes- LOL).

Enjoy your new baby. I am sure enjoying mine. My only regret is that he is already 9 years old, I wish I had met him when he was 3. I will take however long I get to have him in my life and treasure it though. Everyone who sees us together can see how much this little dog loves me and how much I adore him.

My husband was doing a delivery of a load of mulch and then some pine needles from his Saturday side job in our truck so I rode along and I took Teek with me. At one of the stops the homeowner came out and she was petting Teek and laughed at him having a bed on the middle seat of the truck to lay on and was like "He isn't spoiled at all is he with his own seat there?" I was like "Nope, you should see my car, he has an even better set up there." LOL.
