| WORSE after neutering? Hi fellow yorkie moms ... I just got my little guy neutered ... tomorrow will be a week post op. He is 13 months old and house broken. I use puppy pads in my bathroom and he is also trained to go outside. He had been marking in the hallway outside the bathroom where he had accidents as a puppy, which was part of the reason I went through with the neutering. Anyway, since the operation, he has been wearing a cone, he has now peed and pooped in places that he has never gone, one being my living room. I am so confused and wondering if anyone else had this problem or could offer some insight. Thanks so so much! |

| Poor guy might be a little thrown off by the cone and by surgery in general. Is the bathroom with the pad easily accessible for him -- not too far to travel, and easy for him to get into without fear of bumping his cone? Make sure to clean the accident spots thoroughly to remove the scent that might attract him to return.

| close by Yes the bathroom is very close and he has been using it, but just not all the time. It's just very strange. I mean he is running, playing, and generally himself. I am so confused. I hope maybe after the cone is off and he heals he might be back to going in "his spot." Any suggestions on how to get a dog back to his training when he forgets? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Well as he was already peeing and or marking outside the bathroom door - if I understood your post correctly; then you really need to use an enzymatic cleanser on those areas; one which removes the smell of urine or of marking. The cone could definitely be throwing him off, and hopefully 7days past surgery you can remove that cone. When is your recall appointment with the vet? If after 14 days - this being the cone is off for seven days, and you regularly keep to his walk and pee schedule outside, and he is peeing in the house, you might have to go back to puppy housebreaking 101.

| peeing Thanks Gemy. To clarify - he was not peeing in these spots before. These are new spots which is baffling to me. I hope it's just the cone, but why would a cone make him pee in different places? I am supposed to have his stitches out on the 14th day, so tomorrow makes 7 days. Next Friday is his appt for the stitches. Do you think I can take the cone off tomorrow or do I have to keep it on for 14days? I appreciate the input. So confusing sometimes! :-) |

| The need for the cone depends on if you think he will bother his stitches. I strongly suspect the cone is throwing him off his good potty habits. I agree with Gemy, basically you will have to go back to potty training 101, supervising, limiting roaming freedom, putting him on the pad to remind him that it is the correct place. Always praise when he gets it right and don't focus on scolding when he has an accident. Just say "uh oh, supposed to do that on the pad" and bring him to the pad. My boys are 5 and 6 and we still praise for good potties like they are puppies in training. Good luck and keep us posted.
