| car sickness My miniature Yorkie puppy Scarlett, is now six months old and has gone everywhere with me in the car with no sign of car sickness. During the last few days she has suddenly been carsick. Does this mean the end of our trips together. On both occasions my husband has been driving and he is a bit of a jerky driver. She has never been sick when I drive her. She loves going with me. Help please!!!! Helen Mentz: |

| car sickness yorkie solution Hi Helen, I also have a toy yorkie that gets car sick. However, unlike Scarlett, my yorkie has always had car sickness issues since the day I got her...I mean, I literally can't even drive her down the road without her throwing up. This was a major concern for us, considering my husband and I have family in various states, scattered through out the country, and we travel quite a bit and would NEVER consider leaving our baby behind. So, years ago, I asked our vet at the time for a solution to this issue and she simply suggested DRAMAMINE(a motion sickness relief medicine). You can get this over the counter pretty much anywhere. They have different kinds of Dramamine, such as, original(WILL make your dog sleepy), less drowsy, etc... When my yorkie was a puppy, I was advised to give her a quarter of the pill(she was only like 2-3ibs). Now she is about 7IBS and I give her 1/3-1/2 of the pill, which was the suggested dose from my vet. THIS HAS WORKED LIKE A MIRACLE!! I am telling you, this works like a charm. I typically use the original formula for my yorkie and it never seems to make her THAT sleepy. Whenever we stop or say the word "potty" she instantly wakes up. I have been using this for years and it is the only thing that has seemed to work. I even tried the more natural remedy of putting ginger on her nose but nahh that definitely didn't work. The only downside to this is, YES it's a pill, so unfortunately you may have to "help" your dog take it. Maybe someday they will develop a liquid form, which would be helpful. So no, your trips with Scarlett do not have to end...Just get the less drowsy formula. OHH, AND BE SURE TO GIVE HER THE DOSE ABOUT 45 MINUTES BEFORE GETTING IN THE CAR, this way you can be sure that it's kicked in and will work. GOOD LUCK!! Hope this helps(: |

| You can try using a car seat that raises Scarlett, so that she can look out the window. Benadryl also is supposed to help, but I wouldn't want to use that regularly, but it's better than her feeling awful.

| solution My vet recommended Dramamine, a human motion sickness medicine. I started by giving her 1/4th a pill when she was a baby and now give her 1/3-1/2 of the pill. Those were the doses recommended to me by my vet and it has worked GREAT!! The vet also said this particular medicine was safe so that's why I use that brand. GOOD LUCK!! |

| car sickness Thankyou to the people who replied to my yorkie car sickness problem. I appreciate it, but it has taken me until to-day to find the replies. I appreciate it and will try both as we love taking her all over with us, but cannot bear her feeling sick. |

| I adopted Cody when he was 2 1/2 y/o, I have to assume he was not in a car much. The day I took him home he got car sick, the next 2 times in the car, he got car sick. I always took my pups with me even if it was just to the bank. With Cody that was out. My vet gave me pills that had to be given to him 30 minutes before going in the car. I really don't want to have to give pills for a car ride, and most times it is an unplanned car ride, pill had to be given on an empty stomach, Cody eats at 7AM, if I wanted to go out at 9AM his stomach would not be empty, so I never used the pills. For the first 7 months I had him the only time I put him in the car was for vet or groomer, I was not a happy camper. Then In June I got him a booster seat from Pet Supply, it is suspended off the passenger seat. An adjustable strap goes over the head rest, another adjustable strap goes around the back of the seat, there is an attachment that clips to dogs harness so they cannot jump out of the booster seat. NO MORE CAR SICKNESS. He now loves the car, he can see out of the windows, I got one larger then I needed to ensure there would be room for him to sleep. He sits in his booster seat like a little king on a throne. I cannot tell you how happy I am that I am able to take him all over knowing he will not get sick, and no pills that will make him drowsy.

| My friends yorkie used to get really car sick every time she was in the car. She found placing her in the footwell as opposed to the seat really helped. I think the looking out the window is what made her sick, seeing everything moving! She hasn't been sick since! |

| Wow that's too bad. Maybe your vet can give you pills that prevent car sickness.

| yorkie car sickness thanks to all who replied. I think I have solved the problem by taking the suggestion of buying a car seat. This puts her at a height at which she is able to see out and watch everything. She loves it, stands with her hind legs on the floor of the seat and her front bars on the sheepskin bar and watches all the time with a happy smile on her face. I will only go the pill route if I have to, but it is still an option, but so far, so good. Thankyou. Helen Mentz. |
