| Getting no sleep - puppy needs to pee! Hi everyone, We just got our new baby 2 1/2 weeks ago! And I have a couple questions. First....how long til your little guy was potty trained? We're pee pad training him - I am home all day and SO vigilant but he still has 1-2 accidents a day. Just curious. Second...he sleeps in his crate beside our bed right now. We have to get up 3-4 times a night to let him out to go pee (he cries to let us know). I am at the point that I am getting so exhausted by this....I just feel so unrested the next day since my sleep is constantly interrupted. How long do you typically have to wake up multiple times a night for bathroom visits? And...is there any alternative? Like creating doggie stairs off my bed and putting a pee pad in my room? I don't really want to get him going to a 2nd pee pad location (might confuse him?), but he's too little to even get down the stairs to go to his current pee pad right now. Also, do you transition him from crate to in your bed, or crate to his own bed, once he's potty trained? Again, just curious. Any advice/tips would be appreciated! Thanks |

| How old is this baby? I usually have mine pee pad trained when they go to their new homes at 14 weeks old. Yorkies are terriers, and are notoriously stubborn and are usually more difficult to potty train. It requires an unlimited amount of patience and persistance on the part of the owner....then one day, it is like a light switches on and they decide to go along with the program YOU are so determined to establish for them! As far as going into your bed....you have to be very careful he does not jump from the bed, or fall from that height, during the night as he goes to potty. I wait until mine are at least a year old and have some size on them, and I have a ramp....NO JUMPING!!! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 12-07-2014 at 09:40 AM. |

YT Addict | When my pap was little and needed to go often during the night i put a large piece of Plastic ( because of carpet) under her play area and bed. I let her use that if i was to tired to get up. But went out with her faithful during the day. It didnt hinder her learning to go outside. As her bladder grew she no longer had to go at night. You can buy thick plastic at jo ann fabric on the rolls in back of store. |

| Have you thought about using an x pen at night where he has space for his crate to sleep in and a spot to go potty on the other side? Every pup is different as far as night time stuff...Winnie never gave us any issues with it so we were really blessed....we had more sleepless nights when we got our kittens! Honestly I would consider giving him an x pen or something like it where he can go in and out of his crate but still be safe. |

This was exactly my experience with Teddy. We brought him home at 12 weeks but he was trained by 14 weeks. HOWEVER, we still had to let him out at times because even though he knew where to go, if he was crated at night, being trained did not mean his bladder could hold! I think knowing how old the puppy is would be useful as the general rule is that puppies can hold their bladder one hour for every month of age. I would warn that this applies to puppies in general, not individuals, and Yorkies bladders are smaller than dogs in general. Sleeplessness will pass. However, training and sacrifice is what you sign up for when bringing a puppy home! All of the inconvenience is worth it when the AHA moment happens! | |

| An x-pen! What a great idea. I don't know why I didn't think of this...I guess I thought it'd ruin his potty training. He's 12 weeks. Thanks everyone! |
