Do you have multiple crates? What a great site this is, never saw so many people so willing to help---I guess it's a testament to how precious Yorkies are to us all. We are picking up our new little boy next week and I'm planning to take him to work with me as much as possible to help facilitate crate training. I already have a small pet taxi (one of the plastic 2-piece ones) and have ordered a wire one....my thinking is to have the plastic one for the car and the office, and the wire one for the house. I'm thinking about getting another one so that he can have one in the family room and one in the bedroom. Our 14-year-old Yorkie sleeps with us and in the interest of not rocking her "queen of the universe" boat too much (will ask a question about this in a separate thread), the new puppy will sleep in a crate for a while. Do you have multiple crates like this, or for consistency do you use the same one and just schlep it around with you? Thanks

We have two for Blazer. His original "small" Pet Taxi and a slightly larger one. We use the small one for travel times and his "big" one for sleeping in at night or times when I have to leave the house for long periods of time.

We have 2 for Ginger, the house crate is 3 x 2 and the travel is 24 x 18. We used to keep the small one in the bedroom for night time so she was near us when little. Now we just have the big one in living room for when we go out and crate her and she sleeps there at night. We use the little one for long car trips and put a Pee Pad in it so she can go if needed. We only use the carriers for short trips like Vet or Groomer, the hard plastic one for now and the soft one that converts to car seat later when she matures/settles. We are about ready to give her full privileges and only use the crate when she has to stay while we go somewhere and put a bed in the bedroom, she already has a bed in the living room and plays and sleeps there during day. She has full run of house when we are there and only chews her toys. For just a little over 6 months (27 weeks) she is amazingly mature and aware of house rules. She sometimes has a hang fire due to hair or string so we taught her to come over for butt check when she does a two. Sometimes I don't notice her going to the Piddle Pad and she'll come over for a check and stand there, moving with me if I move. If I don't get the message she'll bark, look in the direction of the pad, back at me, back and forth till I get it and check, lol.

That's hilarious, I can just picture a Yorkie doing that! I've been thinking all day today about the logistics of the crate training, and wonder if we'd be better off to just leave him at home and go back and forth from work (very flexible, so no problem). This way, he will be going potty at the same spot every time so maybe that will reinforce it quicker than having outside spots at home and at the office. Ultimately, he can spend a good bit of time at my office but I can certainly wait until he's crate trained and reliable at home before introducing him to a new outdoor spot. Any thoughts on this?

Its best to take time crate training, start just getting used to it then, like sleeping in crate in living room and at night in bedroom. Then short periods during day when your in room, use toys or cookies to get pup to go in crate on own, use a word like "Crate" as pup goes in to get command started. I use "Settle" as a Place Command and to settle down if Pup get wild in crate. Then short trip out of room, minutes at first and lengthening slowly. Once you can leave room at will and come back to a sleeping or relaxed pup do same but leaving home. Avoiding Crate stress is easier then correcting a Crate stressed pup so take your time and treat/praise and above all exercise before crating, always try to take for walk before starting crate training. A well exercised pup is easier to train and way happier

I did not see where you mentioned his age....has he had his series of puppy shots, making him at least 14 weeks old? Until he is completely vaccinated, I would not take him out into public....just like a new born infant, they are susceptable to many diseases and I worry about unvaccinated puppies mixing in with all the people, surfaces, etc in public places. I would suggest he stay at home, since that isnt an issue with you and work! Crate wise, I transport my babies in pet taxis in the car, and I have the wire crates, 28 x 42 for mine to be in for naps everyday, and overnight, and during storms or if I have to leave the house. My dogs were essentially raised in crates, so they love their crates, and at nap time and at bed time, they will go sit by their crate usually, wanting to go to bed.....When they go into their crates, I cover the crates with a sheet, like a bird cage, and they know it is time to be quiet and go to sleep, or just rest quietly, like during storms! Unfortunately, I was not able to take my dogs to work....hospital administration.....so mine had to get used to crates at home. They love their crates, feel very secure in them, and I send my new babies home crate trained to both types of crates! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 09-22-2014 at 03:51 PM.

Also when getting ready to let pup out of crate only when quiet and settled, if you release a whining or jumping pup that will encourage that behavior. Tell the pup settle till she does then release. Whoops, good point on age and shots, Parvo is bad this year here, if you don't have a well fenced yard run him around the house to burn the energy Last edited by windwalker; 09-22-2014 at 03:57 PM.

Ask the breeder your getting him from, many crate train and pad train so all you'll have to do is pick up where they left off

Molly has a pink crate in the bedroom and I have a soft sided crate in the living room I feed her in. My dachshund is food aggressive with other dogs so her in crate while he eats works for us. Plus, he won't try to eat her food if he can't reach it
