| Sleeping in crate or pen? We have had Lady for almost a week. I put her in a playpen beside my bed with an open crate, food and water, and a pee pad. The first night I kept the crate closed and opened if she cried and let her potty and then put her back in the crate. The second night we started leaving the crate open and she would go in and sleep and come out if she needed to pee. She also will take some naps in there during the day and willingly go into the crate and sleeps. The past 2 nights she doesn't want to be in the pen or crate at night and wants to be in bed... With me. I really don't mind sleeping with her but my bed is very high off the ground so I an getting zero sleep because I'm worried she'll wake up and wander off. So do you let them just cry and whine and do the crate or pen? I really want to have a good dog but I'm not sure about the right way to train her to be that way. Also she is almost 8 weeks old. |

You have to treat your pup like you would your kids. I know you have children so you know you can't give into their crying and whining when they want something. If you want to her sleep in your bed, great, but if you don't, you can't give into her crying. If you give into it once, she will continue to do it. I got Lexi at 13 weeks, and had to her sleeping in her crate from day one. She barked the first couple nights, but that was it. She would continue to whine some nights, but I would just tell her to be quite and she would go to sleep. I also only put her in the crate when she was ready to go to sleep. When she was younger I would take her out to go pee if she whined at night, but she would go straight back into the crate. | |

| I'm a softie with my kids too lol! I always let them sleep in bed with me for a while so maybe that's not the best example for me lol I know she is young so I'm just not sure how long is reasonable to stay in the crate at night. She really is doing great and is such a good puppy though |

| Just put the open crate in the pen with potty pads. I promise that if you can resist for a couple of nights she will learn quickly. We put Gracie downstairs in the laundry room after the first couple of nights and she learned almost immediately that it was her safe spot. She may bark when she is there during the day, but we never hear a peep out of her at night. Hang in there, Mommy! |

| She's still young. I can remember those days with Jackson lol... I got him at 9 weeks old. I tried the crate thing - he was a very determined pup. I can remember riding with him in the car in the crate (I was planning on having him in crate for car rides)... about a week worth of car rides and him SCREAMING, I lost that battle. After a few weeks of sleeping with a soft crate ON my bed (literally on my bed), one night I decided to just leave the door open for him... it was the first night he slept through the night, didn't make one peep once, so the rest is history... as they say. I was lucky in the sense that he's always been pretty trustworthy though. I would leave him in an ex-pen when I was away from the house, then we graduated to my bedroom gated in, etc. He got free roam of the whole house by like 6 months. Never chewed anything, etc while I was gone. I never worried about him at night... he's a bigger boy, so even at 6 months, he was already 12lbs and could easily get on/off the bed. I guess it's just a matter of what you prefer. I kind of always knew I wanted a dog in my bed so I didn't worry too much about night-time crate time. I just wanted him to be potty trained and come to find out, he was trustworthy overnight. Now as a pup, I was getting up very early and taking him out etc... but I know people who have 4lb and 5lb dogs that sleep with them. I wouldn't worry much about hurting them. They're smart and will move out of the way if they feel they are going to get hurt.

| You are just up the road from me -- I'm in Fredericksburg. With a small puppy and a high bed, I would stick to having her sleep in the xpen. The risk of falling and injury is high. When she is older, you can train her to use stairs to the bed. Max slept in his xpen for his first year by choice. He insisted on having the gate closed and latched. I suppose that made him feel safe. Although my boys are larger (11.5 inches to the shoulder), I was still concerned about them leaping from my high bed to run to the window in the morning. (these new mattresses and boxsprings are so tall!) I ended up putting my mattress on the floor. The sacrifices I make for these guys!

YT Addict | I have an 11.5 week yorkie pup. He sleeps in the kitchen in the pen with crate in there and the door open. He has access to his water, dry food and ppads. I have done this from day one. He has run of the kitchen during the day off and on, but at night all closed in with crate door open. He cried for two nights. He goes in at 730 pm and I get up at 500 am to feed him. During the day time when he is in the kitchen I open pen up so he has access to ppads from the pen. It works out great for me. |
