Help a newly with Potty Training choice! Hello: I have a tiny (less than one pound) 9 week old Yorkie that will probably only get to 3.5 pounds or so. I originally decided to Pad train Maya but I'm wondering what most people have done with in a dog this size. Do you Pad train or train for outside? How successful is it? What climate do you have. I'm in Michigan but i do have an attached garage where she can go when it's cold. Oh, what to do? LOL Thank you.

Thank you - I agree with the ease of outside training in summer! I appreciate your input. Good luck in the winter, too! I'll probably be in the same situation.

I'm a newby too! I've only had my baby Sophia for 5 days now. She's 10 weeks and is 2lbs 13oz. I was concerned and wondering if I am confusing her by teaching her pad training (UGO mat) and outdoor training. I use the AKC GoodDog helpline and the trainer told me that she can learn to do both! I'm training her to go outside (crate training), but I also have a UGO mat in an exercise pen in the kitchen (along with her food/water bowl and her crate.) Breeder started training her pups on the UGO, so I am using it too. My plan is to use the exercise pen for when I am gone for more than 1.5 hours at her current age. Then, if she needs to go, she can go on the UGO since her little bladder can't hold it that long. If it's about an hour, I just crate her. Crate times will change as she gets older. They say 1 hour for every month in age. (i.e. 2 months means she could stay in crate for 2 hours). However, I am going to be more conservative with these times. I'm hoping that by incorporating the UGO and outdoor training, she knows she will have the option to go on the UGO when it is raining or terribly cold an snowy outside. I live Pittsburgh.

My pup is just about 4 months old and we started with pad training as well as taking him out when we got him at 10 weeks. He's strictly outdoors for potty now but when it rained yesterday my daughter put a pad down and he went with no problem. I think it's possible to do both.

| Lily is 12 weeks old and I am pad training her. Mikki is both pad and outside trained. Rosie is only outside trained. I live in the country and am always seeing critters in the yard. If I had it to do over I would pad train all of them. We have hot hot summers and snow in winters. Lots of rain. Outside potty time isn't always fun. Lol.
