I'm a newby too! I've only had my baby Sophia for 5 days now. She's 10 weeks and is 2lbs 13oz.
I was concerned and wondering if I am confusing her by teaching her pad training (UGO mat) and outdoor training. I use the AKC GoodDog helpline and the trainer told me that she can learn to do both!
I'm training her to go outside (crate training), but I also have a UGO mat in an exercise pen in the kitchen (along with her food/water bowl and her crate.) Breeder started training her pups on the UGO, so I am using it too. My plan is to use the exercise pen for when I am gone for more than 1.5 hours at her current age. Then, if she needs to go, she can go on the UGO since her little bladder can't hold it that long. If it's about an hour, I just crate her. Crate times will change as she gets older. They say 1 hour for every month in age. (i.e. 2 months means she could stay in crate for 2 hours). However, I am going to be more conservative with these times.
I'm hoping that by incorporating the UGO and outdoor training, she knows she will have the option to go on the UGO when it is raining or terribly cold an snowy outside. I live Pittsburgh. |
