Yorkie Talker | Need help with Car anxiety I'm hoping someone can give me good advise on how to help my new Yorkie overcome an anxiety for the car. He's 3 years old and has been pretty much kept out of cars because he was nervous. I've only had him 2 weeks now and don't expect a miracle. Time and patience will be required to help Shiloh. Its important that he start to feel safe in the car. I take my dogs to as many places with me as I can and I take them in the car every day. I won't leave the little guy behind when the Golden gets to go with Mommy. Currently, we've basically ignored the anxiety. Once he's in the car for a few minutes he starts to calm down. Once he's calm, we give him attention and affection and he's ok until we get home. After a week, we were able to get him calmed down enough in the car that he would actually take a treat. if anyone has any other ideas or has helped a Yorkie overcome an anxiety I would love to hear your experience! Thanks Nanoki |

| One of my girls gets sick in the car and I realized it was because of anxiety instead of motion sickness, I got some Rescue Remedy by Bach for dogs and you put a drop on the tongue and I put a drop on her ears about 30 minutes before we get in the car. Then I put her in a kennel that she can't really see outside with a blanket and she hasn't gotten sick since. You might want to try some. Also, I've heard if they are anxious you are supposed to just get in the car and sit in the drive way for a few minutes and not go anywhere, give her treats and praise her when she is calm. Then you do it again the next day and maybe turn on the engine but still not go anywhere, praise and treat her when she is calm. Then you can maybe drive down the block and back the next day, etc... You just have to go slow and acclimate her back into going in the car. Good Luck.

| When I first got Toby he was very anxious in the car. What I found to help Toby get used to the car.......put the car in the garage, open the doors and get in and just sit in it without it running and get him used to it. I did this for at least a week. I had to buy a car seat for Toby because he used to be a "runner." Whenever a door was opened he would run out the door. So I would sit him in his car seat (in the garage) and tell him good boy and give him a treat. He now does great in the car and loves, loves, loves to go bye-bye. I don't even latch him in his car seat unless I'm getting out of the car to get gas or something. It definitely takes patience and time. He was not used to riding in a car and how he loves it. Positive reinforcement is key in training these pups. Sometimes I think they "get it" and act like they don't just so they can keep getting treats! Good luck...........and one more thing, Toby gets car sick on winding roads and hills so I give him a 1/2 dramamine (non drowsy formula) about an hour before we hit the road for the two hour ride and he does fine. When we come back home from camping, the hills and winding roads are first and he doesn't need a dramamine on the way home. By the time we hit the hills, he's already been in the car for 1 1/2 hours so the dramamine has had plenty of time to kick in. He weighs about 9 lbs. and the vet said it was fine to give him 1/2 pill. I used to give him a 1/4 but it didn't always work. I think sometimes it is just trial and error................ Good luck and keep us posted.

| I have found that cracking a window helps with mine. I wonder if being closed up in a car does something to their ears. |

| Doggies have different emotions, it will take some time to adjust for them in the cars. Some doggies will have more anxiety feelings comparing with others. Providing some treats, toys and affection before the travel. I used to give warm hug. It also works if you train your dog in prior. My friend used to do this to reduce the anxiety feelings in her doggie during the travelling. She used to spray a little quantity of aromatherapy scent in the kennel or in the collar might also calm your pet. |
