| Puppy pad training tips and question I just got my first yorkie. He is 8 weeks old. It is awful weather out right now (since i live in Missouri) and i dont want him getting sick so i decided to train him on puppy pads. He has already peed on them, but I was wondering if there are any tips you guys have for potty training with the puppy pads. Also, I was wondering how many of you have continued to use puppy pads for your adult yorkies. I'm not sure if I want to train him with pads as he gets older or if I want to switch him over to going outside. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone. |

| Ya , I wasn't sure. He is only 8 weeks old. I have plenty of time to get him potting outside. But, until it decides to warm up and quit raining and snowing, I'll just train him inside I guess. |

| Hi I just got my first yorkie when she was 6 weeks. She's 8 weeks now. I have been using puppy pads and she pees on them a lot but still has accidents. I bring her outside in the yard and run around with her and when shes pees or poos i give her a treat and tell her good girl. Is it going to confuse her since im trying to train inside and outside? |

YT 2000 Club Member | I have a 19 month old that is trained for a pad but will also go outside on command. I, too started her on potty pads because of the rainy, cold and snowy weather. She still uses it most of the time unless we are outside. I started out by just taking her to the pad and giving the command "go potty" and then rewarding with praise and play. I don't give treats but many do. She does go for the most part on her own. She does still have some accidents and forgets, especially after playing, she needs to be reminded where to go potty. With consistency, they will learn to do both inside and outside. Congrats on your new puppy!

| The keys to success are to restrict freedom to a smallish area with the pad within easy reach, establish keywords and phrases, and praise when your pup gets it right. I blogged about my training experience with tips here: Potty Training Small Dogs - Dog Life and Style My boys are both pad and outdoor trained. They know that they only have their pads at home, and anywhere else indoors is off limits. Quote:

| Great tips. Thanks everyone. I actually stay at home and he is only allowed where I let him which is in the living room. I have everything right in arms reach. So he's doing pretty good so far. He doesn't even know what to do outside. I tried it today and he just wants to play with the grass. |

| Puppy Pads I'm feeling conflicted about using the puppy pads for Blake...I want to train him to go outside, but I work part time, three days a week, and can't go home to let him out every two hours. (He's only 3 months old). I also leave him in his X pen at night with the puppy pads. I'm wondering if I train him to the pads, will he ever housetrain? He's also started to tear the pads up when he pitches a fit...thinking of getting the washable pads. |

| My dog trainer said that both are fine. The just need to learn on the pad or outside. Mines are only on the pad, if we walk its for exercise and they go too. It's just easier to have the pads, my backyard has tile so I have to walk a bit to get to the grassy area.
