| Is my husband right LOL So yesterday I finally got to go and get my beautiful baby bella she is the most adorable thing at 12 weeks and 1.5 lbs and right now I am trying to get her use to being a lone for a couple hours a day what we are doing is we gated of one of the extra bathrooms and put her in there for a couple hours with the door closed and all she does is cry, I told my husband we should open the door so she can see and he said that would just make it worse because its like teasing her I want to go in and pick her up because she will cry for awhile then it stops for a little while then she starts up again I guess I am at loss for what to do here do I just leave her and let her cry it out do I pick her up Also what is the best setup for when I am away? I have a bathroom gated off with her kennel in there if she wants to go in her water and food as well as a puppy pad if she needs to go to the bathroom I am a new yorkie owner and I have been reading a lot but sometimes nothing is as good as advice from and experience yorkie owner -Liz |

| Hi and welcome to YT!!! Congrats on your new addition! I know how excited and nervous you are as I've only had my yorkie for a couple months myself. I know I used to think closing our puppy off in a bathroom was the right thing to do but since coming to YT have heard what others have done and changed my mind. I don't know what your living arrangements are (i.e. house or apartment) but if you have the room, many people use a crate and an X-pen setup for their puppies. The crate serves as the pup's "safe place" and a place for them to sleep inside the X-pen. The X-pen (we ended up getting a play pen) serves as a place that contains the crate, pee pad(s), food and water, and a few toys. As for leaving your pup for a few hours, there are things for you to remember, such as: I don't want to scare you but your puppy is very young. Young enough to experience a sudden drop in blood sugar leading to hypoglycemia (which can cause death). Is there someone who would be willing to watch your pup while you are away? Do you have Nutrical on hand in case of a drop in blood sugar? Also your puppy is probably experiencing separation anxiety from leaving it's mommy. Do you have another dog at home to keep him company?? There are other things to consider as well and there are suggestions that will probably help you out. Unfortunately, I'm still rather new to this as well so I will bump this up so others will see it and come by to offer you help. I wish you all the best in raising your new baby! Again congrats and stay in touch, I'd love to see how she grows.

| Congratulations on your new pup. I think it is good that you want to acclimate her right away to being left alone, but the problem with your method is that she can still smell you. Dogs have keen sense of smell. I also agree with LdyRev that with such a small pup, I would be concerned about leaving her alone for too long for fear of hypoglycemia. Breeders will often keep pups until they are at least 2 pounds for this reason. With bathrooms, make sure that you have the lid of the toilet closed, and consider putting a child safety lock on it. There have been a couple of tragedies here on YT involving toilets. Little Yorkies often have amazing jumping and climbing skills and can surprise you.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | It is very good that you are trying to get her used to being without you for a couple of hours a day. If you have a suitable surface and space in the main living areas of your house, I would get an ex pen a kiddy play pen is fine, and have her in there where she can feel safe, has her potty pads (if you are using those) and water and a bit of her total food allowance for the day. The idea is she can hear, smell, see, catch glimpses of you as you cook, clean, talk on the phone etc. On your way through your day, if she is quiet randomly walk over and praise her for her quietness and give a treat and a pet. Now you might know the expression used for human kids, of spending Quality time with them. This is what you want to do with your pup. When you bring her out of the Xpen, do some high valued things with her. Treats, pets, walks, play with toys, go outside to pee and or poo. 100% of your attention is focused on her then. Love her all over. Without fuss or muss when play time is over back into the pen she goes, with a what a good girl - Moms needs to work now - or what ever phrase you would like to signal you are off to do stuff. You haven't mentioned potty training, but the early days of a pups life, can be hard on the owner. We usually get bleary eyed as small bladders need to go out at night. Well I outdoor train all my dogs. and during the day they need frequent every 2hrs or so, that can be spread out as they grow up Let us know if you have other questions, or if what I/we responded is unclear to you.
