I saw something so cute about looking at the yard from a Yorkie's view point and I realized that's why Sabrina won't go outside. Even right after the yard's mowed it's up to her knees - not a good place to poo or pee. She won't go outside either. So she's paper trained.

5 months old is still really young for a yorkie to be potty trained. It is really common for a yorkie to be over a year old before you can trust them on the carpet.

It took me several months and lots of talking to other Yorkie owners to finally train Prince. Trust me I've thought of giving up to. But that's the worst thing you could do because every dog is smart and just needs the proper guidance. Dont insult his intelligence by quitting because that's just going to ruin your relationship with him. My relationship with Prince has became a lot stronger after the training process. He doesnt have it 100% down yet but he tries. Please don't give up on your baby because you are all he's got. Take the other poster's advice and give him a little more time outside. You may want to train him to go indoors. If you decide to do that, I can give you lots of advice because I had to try many methods to train Prince since he was older and had free run of the house, which is very bad. However in 2 months he knew what he had to do. Dollar wants to please you remember that. Prince also knows when he does mistakes and runs, but I catch him and tell him in a firm tone that was very bad and hit his hiney lightly and make believe I'm weeping. He hates to see me weeping. You need to observe Dollar and see what he likes and doesnt like so that you can use it to your advantage in training him. Hope this helps!!!! Prince and I wish you luck.

What kind of wee pads are you using? Some are better than others and have that "scent" in them. I was reading somewhere not to ever let your dog see you clean up his mess or they will view it as a game.
Good luck!

Thumbs up

Be careful about reprimanding for indoor mistakes. If you get angry when you catch him pooping indoors he may misunderstand and just think you will get angry if he poops at all and he will just get sneakier about it and may be afraid to poop in front of you outside as well.

Toni,

Just curious if you have kept up with this thread? Have you tried any of the suggestions?

How is Dollar doing?

Default I need help

I have been trying to train my little Ethan for over a month now. He is now 5 mohts old. He will go outside but when he is in the house he will not use the pee pads. I am going to switch to pee pads only because I work and hate to confuse him with outside and pee pads. How can I get him to use the pee pads? He will just go anywhere and everywhere in the house. I crate him while I am gone but he goes in it too. I was told to try a smaller crate. I am buying one tonight and hope that will help him not to go in his crate. Are any pads better than others? I am desperate.. He does sleep with me at night and does not have accidents - constantly wants to go outside though(more like a game now..). Help.

hey guys.....thanks for all of the advise....I am going to try to crate him tonight. he peed in the bed again last night so I will go back to trying to keep him in there at night.

I am not as frustrated as before....and about the reprimading in the house I have been told that this is a good thing to do by professionsal on trining so now I am confused. I think that he will get it in time, I was just frustraed last time. B/c I know that he is smart......lol

hre is what I am going to try. Crating him at night. And if he does go in the out say a frim NO! and then say go outside and take him right out. When I take him out and he goes I will do the same as before...say good boy lots and pet him and give him a treat!

the first few days when i took yoshi outside we'd be out there for the better part of an hour, and i think i said "go pee" at least 64546546m3645636346 times (no exagerration. u think i just smashed the keyboard w/ my hands, but thats really how much it was). my mouth seriously hurt from saying it. i also made sure he drank an ocean about 2 or 3 minutes beforehand or went right out after crating for a few hours or crating at night. i think it might help to either pump him full of water beforehand, or have him confined in his crate where he wont want to go so his bladder fills but he holds it directly before taking him outside.

after i finally got him to go pee outside, i tried to act like he had just saved the world and i gave him a treat he really likes. a month or two into it now, he is still going inside sometimes when i am not paying attention (he's not nearly trained yet), but he knows when he goes outside part of the deal is he is supposed to pee, so its like 5-10 seconds from the door to the grass and into pee stance. then he races over to me lookin for his reward, which half the time is a treat now and half the time is just lots of praise. hope this helps, take care

I never thought about that. But then how else are you supossed to train them and teach them that it's bad to go inside? Kelsey "hides" her poop from me and when I find it she's not too far with a "uh oh mommy found it" look on her face. I tell her "no" and then take her outside right away and tell her to go potty and say "good girl" even if she doesn't go so she knows that it's ok to go outside.

I think kelsey "got it" when she was about 6 months. She still has her slip ups though.
