| Potty Problems I purchased a Yorkie puppy in December of last year for my wife and daughter for christmas. They loved the dog for the first little while and then I ended up being the lap in which Dolly would sit. We all love her to death but I am having problems with potty training. She will only pee on the potty pad if we walk her to it and say potty Dolly. If we do not walk her over she will just hold it untill we walk her over. It would be nice if she would just go pee when she needs to but at least she uses the pad for peeing so it is okay. Poo Poo is another story she will not poop on the pad unless we fence her in and don't let her out until she poop. I don't like to force her to be on the potty pad till she poops. We tried taking her outside to poop but she has ate something that is in my yard that has made her so sick we had to take her to the vet 2 times since we have had her. So we really don't want to take her out anymore. Any advice would be nice! |

| with potty training i've found it takes many repititions of saying GO POTTY when he's on the pad, then giving him praise and a treat for pottying. I have done it hundreds of times for him to finally get it... he still makes mistakes and he's 5 months. but he's 100X better than when he was only 3 months |

| Yorkies are notoriously hard to potty train. Patience, diligence and consistency are the best advice that I can offer. As much as you dislike confining her to use the pad, you must be dilegent in your training. They like routine and really if you give them mixed signals, they will get confused. When potty training, you should restrict their roaming abilities. Some have even suggested tethering them to you with a lease. We did this for a very short period of time with Maggie. I personally didn't care to use a crate for potty training but did use an expen. I kept the pad, crate, toys, food and water in there. I would watch like a hawk and learned the signs that mine would give when they were going to potty and placed them on the pad, over and over again until they used it. When potty training, you should use one phrase for it and initially only say it when they are in the act of going. Once they associate this phrase, they will understand it when you take them for a walk. Consistency is what you will need to keep at it. As for walking outdoors, mine get into rabbit poop, YUK! You will just need to try and keep an eye on what she gets into. Hot Rod took to the grass with no problems whereas Maggie would pee but not poop. She would literally come back in and head straight for the pad to poo. It took her a couple of months of praise and treats before she would go outside. Thankfully she has no accident and very good about using the pad. She is almost 4. Now Hot Rod, my 4 1/2 year old has reverted to pooping in the house if he cannot go outside. He pees on the pad all day long but would rather potty elsewhere. He gives definite signs of when he has too poop, sometimes he will run over to that pad but then kinda jack rabbits on the pad and runs off. We've gone back to training 101 and put the gates up to keep him in the kitchen/family room areas. It's worked to a point as he chooses to hold it most of the time til we take him out but I have found surprises from time to time if I forget to close the gate(s). Fortunately he's pretty consistent in his schedule so it's pretty easy to take him out at those times and as a result no accidents in the house. Just keep at it and it will happen. Patience, diligence and consistency! Good luck.

| pooping in the house I've read some of the posts, seems like yorkies are somewhat famous for potty/poop training issues. I have an almost 3 year old female. She very quickly learned to pee outside. Pooping has always been an issue for her though. I don't know how common it is for yorkies or yorkie females to have problems with their anal glands but just about every time she gets groomed, the groomer needs to express her anal glands because of them being so full. I had to take her to the vet for a nail trim in between groomings - and again she was full. Vet expressed anal glands to find out she had an infection. We did weekly "expressions" at the vet until it was cleared up. She's due to go back next week for a checkup (it's been a month since infection cleared up) but now it seems as though she's rebelling with her pooping again. She is so much "Mama's Girl" that she will seldom ever go poop for anyone else but me outside and lately when I take her for her normal routine walk and I encourage her to go, she comes in the house and poops within half an hour. She knows it's wrong because she heads straight to her kennel. I don't know if any of this makes sense but just am looking for some advice. |

| HI , I HAVE A 6 MONTH OLD NUETERED MALE YORKIE AND I AM HAVING A HECK OF TIME POTTY TRAINING THE LITTLE RASCAL. HIS BREEDER KEEPS ALL PUPPIES IN THE KITCHEN IN AN X-PEN WITH THE FLOOR COMPLETELY COVERED WITH PADS SO I THINK THAT TAUGHT HIM THAT HE CAN GO WHEREVER HE WANTS. SINCE I BROUGHT HIM HOME HE HAS GONE WHEREVER. I HAVE SINCE PURCHASED A NEW LITTER BOX WITH A GRATE INSTEAD OF PAD AND I HAVE PUT A LARGE X PEN IN MY LIVING ROOM. SO FAR HE HAS DONE A POO ON IT ONCE WHEN I CAUGHT HIM AND PUT HIM IN THE BOX. YIKES, I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE A LONG ROAD TO BEING POTTY TRAINED... THIS IS THE LITTER BOX I GOT... | Dolly has been doing good with only 1 accident which was because my parents came and stayed at the house and my mother gave her some ritz crackers while I wasn't looking! We take her to her potty pad about once per hour and say potty and then poo poo. She will do either if she has too! |

| We had really good success with repetition as well. We never waited for him to be ready, we just took him to the pad every 30 minutes or so. We sat him on the pad and said go pee pee over and over. After 5 minutes, we would go back to doing what we were doing. Couple of weeks and he used the pad exclusively. It takes time and patience. In the end it pays off. It will seem like your not making progress, and then boom, it will click. Key is to not wait until it time to go. Take your dog to the pad when ever you think about it. Get up...to the pad...sit down...to the pad...anytime you do anything...to the pad. It will pay off in the end, and it wont take long. Our dickie is 5 months and we have not taken him to the pad since he was 14 weeks old. he goes when he needs too. He sleeps in a crate, and waits till i get up at 5am to go...sprint to the pee pad. Funny thing too. if he has to pee while he is in his crate, he does a light scratch on the wall. If he is unhappy in his crate, he cries, whines, and barks(we ignore this). He trained us to know when he really needs to get out and use the pad. he is very polite when he really needs something good luck...be patient |
