Potty training advice I am excited!!!! I finally found a puppy and I will be picking her up in about 2 weeks. I thought I was all prepared- i have some clothes, two beds, an ex-pen, a crate, and bowls. Now that I know she will be here soon I willl finish shopping. But, I thought I had decided on a potty method- I was going to use the little rascal. Then I came across the puppy apartment. Now I am confused. So I wanted some advice from some professionals!! I have heard some say indoor pottying is wrong but I work during the day so I need an indoor method I just dont know what is the best one. Also what are the advantages of the washable pee pads except for the fact that they are more economical than regular pee pads? Please help. All advice is greatly appreciated.

I've found the best method is to use an x-pen with potty pads on covering one side and a bed on the other. I praised like crazy and gave a treat whenever she went potty on the pad. And I only took her out to play after she went pee, so I knew I had a little time for her to run around before she'd need to go again. Also, I've always schedule fed my pups so that poop time was predictable. Once she knew to go potty on her pads, I open one side of the xpen and closed off the entrance to the room the xpen was in, so her roaming area was still limited. She still took herself to her potty pads when she needed to go pee and again, I praised like crazy and gave a treat (usually a piece of cooked carrot or a piece of apple). Gradually, I made her roaming area bigger and took down the xpen, but still left the potty pads exactly where they had always been. Then over the course of a couple of days, I moved the potty pads a few feet each day until they ended up in the hallway across from the bathroom where I wanted them Best of luck with the potty training. Just be consistent and praise & reward all positive behaviour, and ignore the accidents while cleaning them thoroughly. These lil pups love to please, which really helps with training.

Thanks do much!!! Great advice from the professionals!! KazzyK810 uses the method I was thinking of at first. Then instead of the pads I wanted to try the litter box. Maybe I will just stick with the pads. I don't think I can use the washable pads because I am very funny about what goes in my washer and dryer. In the past I have taken the dog stuff to a laundry mat. I know it sounds stupid but I'm just funny about that. Thanks again for the advice!!!

Ok so would it be confusing if I used the rascal litter box downstairs and while she is in her expen then the puppy apartment when she is upstairs? I would use the puppy apartment at night when she is sleeping so she can potty when she needs to. Or should I stick with one method?

The type of pads the puppy has been using at the breeders is best to continue with at home. Ziva was trained on newspaper and that is still where she feels most comfortable (not a problem for me- free!) Abby will use the disposable potty pads when she has to. I tried the grass, it got gross fast and when I bleached it Abby would not go near it. I think the tray underneath the pads/ paper is great so they have to step up a little and don't pee right on the edge- I use a cover from a rubbermaid tote.

| I did the expen and potty pad method. I had pads around the room just in case if I saw the signs of him/her needing to potty, I would just put them on it. Maggie was actually washable pad trained when she came home, she had trouble going on the disposable ones. I used both for awhile and just got away from the reusable ones. They have a pad in their pen at all times, I felt, too, that they should be able to potty on their schedule, not mine. I would just add to the advice you have received, have much patience! They will give you the signs of needing to potty, you just need to learn how to read them and place them on a pad. As they are going, use one phrase and say it over and over so they will learn what it is. As they learn it, you will be able use it once you take them outside. Hopefully, they will associate what you are saying and know that is what you want from them outside. Good luck and congrats on you new addition.

Thanks... I'm thinking I'm just going to go with the pee pad method. It will be cheaper because I can put a pad in every room way cheaper than a little rascal in every room. And pads seem easier to travel with
