I did the expen and potty pad method. I had pads around the room just in case if I saw the signs of him/her needing to potty, I would just put them on it. Maggie was actually washable pad trained when she came home, she had trouble going on the disposable ones. I used both for awhile and just got away from the reusable ones.
They have a pad in their pen at all times, I felt, too, that they should be able to potty on their schedule, not mine.
I would just add to the advice you have received, have much patience! They will give you the signs of needing to potty, you just need to learn how to read them and place them on a pad. As they are going, use one phrase and say it over and over so they will learn what it is. As they learn it, you will be able use it once you take them outside. Hopefully, they will associate what you are saying and know that is what you want from them outside.
