| Barking while not home...any insight? We live in a condo building in NYC and we just adopted our yorkie pup a couple of weeks ago. He is 4 months old. Thus far, we have not had a problem with him barking at all while we are home. When we leave the apartment, we put him in his playpen. In his playpen, he has everything he needs...pee pad, water, a little food, his crate, a toy. When we come home, we can hear him barking from the elevator, and we have no idea how long he has been barking! Has anyone experienced this and have any insight on how to prevent this so our neighbors won't hate us? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Some people suggest leaving the TV on so that it drowns out other noises. Others say to get an interactive toy, one that holds his kibble and he can play with so he won't be so bored. Many people get Yorkies because they need lots of attention. I think puppies especially seem to need lots of attention, and its not a dog I recommend for someone whos gone all day. Any chance you can take him to doggy day care?

| When mine were puppies I left the tv on, I also had toys that warmed in the microwave and others that had a heartbeat to put in the crate with them. Good Luck! Usually, puppies just get used to being alone for periods of time and learn to be quiet.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think it sometimes helps if they have a littermate.

We tried leaving the tv/radio on - but nothing could drown out that noise. I think Harry used to compete with it! Once he was completely house-trained, we secured everything and gave him a much free-er run of the house. That really did help. All I can say is - it does get easier as they get older. Completely agree with the suggestion of good doggy-daycare if it's affordable for you. In the meantime (what we did - and it made us feel a lot better!) we visited all our neighbours and explained the situation, pre-empting complaints. I really hope it works out ok for you - good luck! | My Cali is about the same age. She started a phase of whining to a point where she sounded like she was hurt or dying... at first when it was small whining, we would just leave her be and she would stop...then it was really really bad. I found that giving her a reall good play session or walking her on a solid walk would get her energy out and calm her down. Also,we have velcroed fabric to the outside walls of her Graco playpen so that she cant see out on the sides...for some reason it makes her fell secure and contained. This has helped tremendously...maybe a blanket over the kennel cage is a good idea. It's all trial and error, eventually you will find what works. I think this is something in "phase" form and it will pass. When CaLi doesn't have proper and sufficient toys to keep ker busy in her play pen....she is so very rebellious and annoying. I limit water and food in the pen, so that urgent feelings of wanting to "go" are limited to a last resort on the pads. Good luck

| Thanks for the responses! We started leaving a radio talk show on and bought some interactive toys for his pen...and I'm happy to report that we we have not noticed him barking or whining when we come home anymore! We do not leave him for long periods...only a few hours when we both are at work, but he seems to be less lonely when he hears the radio and has things to play with. |
