Thanks for the responses! We started leaving a radio talk show on and bought some interactive toys for his pen...and I'm happy to report that we we have not noticed him barking or whining when we come home anymore! We do not leave him for long periods...only a few hours when we both are at work, but he seems to be less lonely when he hears the radio and has things to play with.
