| I think it is pretty much animal instinct to do that dirty little deed. I think when they smell each other's rear ends or each others poo is even grosser but it's how they tell whose who in the dog world.

| Joeyk79, what you describe is competely normal. No, your dog isn't different. It's like the old joke: "Why does a dog lick his ____? Because he can!". |

| You can't stop it. That's just what they do. You can discourage it, but that's only cosmetic. If you're not looking and he feels like, he will. He probably thinks you're crazy for being upset about it. Our male dogs always looked at me like I was losing my mind. But neutering him will cut down on the worst parts. |

| Well licking his butt is normal and well they have to keep it clean. Even if it is gross. Now if he is licking the rest of him self and a lot then three things things can be happening one he was allergies, two he is stressed and trying to calm him self or three he is dirty. You have to figure out which of the three it is and go from there on how to handle it. Joy |

| I yell at him and he just looks at me like why? Usually he'll stop but then do it again later..I have to get him neutered because he is humping the bears |

| Even if he is neutered he may hump the bear. |

| My husband says he's jealous and that he wishes he could do that to himself . |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Are you a first time dog owner? Yes, they clean themselves. It's instinct and I don't think you'll be able to break them of that.

| My boys, even the eighth month old pups, don't do it that often. When I do see them do it I just look at it like they are giving themselves a mini bath. Bentley isn't neutured but he doesn't do it that often either...maybe he will do it less with time

| Gross way to clean yourself, I just hope they don't get sick or anything from that. I use belly bands and he will lick the bands sometimes and I just yell at him |

| Please be careful about yelling at him. I have had Teddy since last March and there has not been one time that I have so much as raised my voice at him much less yelled at him. They are so sensitive emotionally...I realize you may not like him cleaning himself but as everyone has told you it is normal. If you don't like seeing it then redirecting his attention will work just as well as yelling at him and does a lot less damage. You can teach your baby to have pretty good manners but you will never be able to prevent him from being what he is where his instincts are concerned.

| I agree...stop yelling at him. It's like someone yelling at you for taking a shower or brushing your hair. Wouldn't you think they were rediculous? If you're going to have a pet, you have to accept the nature of the animal. Try giving him a bath once a week. It sounds like he feels dirty. Just please, stop yelling at the poor animal.
