| ![]() You can solve the post-mealtime accident problem by being prepared to have Rudy go out the second he is finished eating. If you take him out on his leash, have his harness on him before he eats so that you can hook up the leash and go straight out the door. Most potty training methods recommend taking the dog out immediately after meals. Relative to the other accidents and waking up too early, has your schedule or routine changed? Keeping a consistent bedtime and waking time will help him to stick to a schedule. Wear him out playing and/or trick training, anything stimulating, before bedtime. Make sure he has a potty break immediately before going to bed. All of these things should help eliminate accidents or waking too early. For surgery, did you have the pre-op blood tests done? Be sure to follow the doctor's post-op instructions about limiting exercise and no bathing. You may need a cone to prevent Rudy from licking the surgical site. Sending best wishes for your boy for a speedy recovery. ![]()

| ![]() Thank you for your input. I do usually take him out right after eating but I guess 10-15 minutes is not soon enough! I thought they would need some time for digestion I guess not like humans huh? As far as night time goes my son was sick and we got up at 4am so maybe thats why I know in the past if I get up to use the broom his ears go up but than he goes back to bed so maybe thats what happened this time w/ hearing us up. But he did not cry to let me know he had to go out he just does it in the crate which is sooo annoying. I guess I am just wondering when he will be trained I thought by 6mths it would be great. I eventually want to let him go thru my whole home but I cant right now while he is accident prone. For the neutering no there was no pre op blood work I am going to a low cost neuter spay clinic so maybe that is why. Thanks so much! |

| ![]() The post-meal time potty break is usually not to eliminate the food and water just consumed. It is to eliminate what was taken in earlier. Whenever a dog wakes up, he is probably going to feel the urge to eliminate. If you get up during the middle of the night, you should probably take your pup out to do his thing too. As he matures, he may not need this as much. You could also try increasing the frequency of potty breaks throughout the day. That may help his need at night. Be sure to praise every single time he potties outside where he should. Maybe even give him a small treat. Don't scold for accidents. Maybe just say, "uh oh" in a non-scolding way and then forget it. Although I use pads in addition to outdoor potty breaks, I still praise my 2-year old boys every single time they potty in the right place. I act very silly about it, "Woohoo! Way to go Max!" ![]() Best wishes to your boy for a speedy recovery after surgery.

| ![]() Hi Thanks again for ur feedback! I cant take u how frequently I take Rudy out every hour it is crazy! Since I got him at 3mths old for 3mths now it is very frequently during the day. Night time has changed b/c he was doing great at night. I do praise often he gets treats and he waits for it. I have another yorky who is 14 this is not my first pet, but he just seems difficult maybe b/c I am older now and have 3 children and dont remember when my 14 yr old yorky was young b/c I was young at that time and my parents did most of the work lol! I have had 3 yorkies prior to Rudy so I know yorkies. I guess he is gonna take longer. Thanks |

| ![]() LOl, your parents did all the work --- love your honesty! ![]() From reading here on YT, I think some do take longer than others. Is Rudy a really little guy? Maybe his bladder is still maturing, possibly?

| ![]() Rudy is about 3#7 oz now so he is still tiny. When were your yorkies trained? I just do not want to have a yorky that is having accidents at 2 yrs old I never had that problem you read some posts and yorkies are this age and having accidents I want him to be trained and thats it. I would like to give him the opportunity to be with us through out the house and not just confined to one area, but he and Myles my older yorky need to b/c friends first thats another issue. I thought I was doing good by getting Rudy for my older yorky but Myles doesnt want any part of Rudy. It is sad. I dont know If i made the right move here. Ok have a great day! Thanks |

| ![]() Potty training is one my boys' greatest strengths/achievements, lol, so I won't tell you. ![]() Rudy's size and the issue of relations with Myles may be playing a little into your challenges with potty training him. Neutering may help, but don't be discouraged if there is a temporary setback. There is a small chance that things could worse before they get better. Keep up with frequent trips outside, focusing on going out immediately after meals, immediately when waking up for the day or after a nap, immediately after play session or any other excitement, and right before bedtime. Keep up with the praise. Maybe Rudy also needs a different system to alert you that he needs to go. Maybe bells on the doorknob for him to paw and ring? There are many choices. As for relations between the two boys, that can take time. I brought my second Yorkie home at 8 months old, but he was still an annoying puppy to my nearly 2 year old. There was also jealousy from the older one, Max. Some things we worked out fairly quickly, but overall, it took a good 8 months before things were perfect. You can encourage your boys' bonding by doing activities together that both like, maybe walks or having a special treat together. Sometimes, unfortunately, a much older dog never accepts the puppy.

| ![]() Hi Kristin, Thanks again. How old are your yorkies now? So for training them what did u do? What worked for them best? The bell thing is a good idea I just said to my husband my kids will be ringing it all day long lol! I may try that He is separate from Myles all day long so dont think that plays into his training issues I think it stemmed from the breeder that did no training what so ever! What was ur experience w/ the neutering? Why did you say they can go backwards after it? Just curious. I appreciate your time in answering me, possibly u can contact me at cd2545@msn.com this way we can talk easier there. Thanks Denise |

![]() My boys are 2 years and 2.5 years old. We still use piddle pads in addition to outdoors, so not all of my training methods will help you. The primary elements, you are already employing: praise, limiting freedom to move about the house, supervision, frequent potty trips. I personally did not experience any problems after neutering, but I have read here on YT of rare instances of it happening. You likely do not need to be concerned. There are different kinds of bells that you can use -- either hanging jingle bells on the doorknob that your pup can paw at when he needs to go out, or a classic school teacher type bell on the floor. There is a doggy doorbell sold on amazon that comes with detailed instructions on how to train your dog. There are also a couple of "sticky" posts at the top of this forum with more info on potty training. You could go back to the strict crate training method which is described in one of those posts.

And your older Yorkie can be a really big help in training the pup..they watch each other and feed off each other...Bella was a huge help in potty training Harley and letting me know it was time to go outside...Bella comes and sits in front of me and barks at me when she needs to go outside to potty...Harley is 9 mos old now and is doing the same thing now but he does a little growl than he barks...its so cute...lol

| ![]() hi thanks for ur feedback it was helpful. how old are your yorkies? right now rudy got neutered yesterday so they will stay separate for a while. They are separate for the most part b/c of training isssuess and rudy just bothering myles. I want Rudy trained before he goes free in the house. What I was doing was allowing about 10 minutes for them to play together well it is a barking fest actually but it was cute I think Myles actually liked it his tail wags but than he gets scared b/c his teeth are sooo bad if Rudy goes towards his face he gets all upset. It was sad for me to see him like that. But I will continue once Rudy's 10 days of rest are up! Thanks again I am happy to know they may be friends soon. Denise |

![]() Like I said in my above post...of course after Rudys recovery...you really need to let them work out their issues with one another by letting them interact together, with you playing with them and letting them play together without help from you but watching them closely, if they get into a HUGE fight of course stop it...but if your older yorkie is just showing teeth and growling or even nips at the pup let them be...your older Yorkie is teaching the pup that behavior is unacceptable and the pup will learn what he can get away with and what he can't...Your older yorkie will be your best train tool for your pup...as far as behavior, trick training, potty training..they feed off one another...I know Bella was a HUGE help in training Harley. Potty training is a 24/7 job that never ends, not even when you think they are fully trained....How does your older yorkie let you know he has to potty? when your older yorkie lets you know he has to potty take Rudy too...and as your going outside say to Rudy...lets go outside to potty in a happy very exciting voice...once your outside tell him go potty and keep saying it until he does..than throw a potty party with a treat for a reward..tell him what a good boy he is and that your happy he pottied outside..yorkies love to please you, once he see how happy and pleased you are with that behavior, he will continue to do it just so he can get that happy attention from you ![]() I think I seen in one of your post, you crate trained him but is having accidents in the night? do you leave the door of the crate open or is it closed when he is having the night time accidents? If you are leaving the door open of course he is going to leave the crate and potty, the answer to that is close the door so he can't get out!...at 6 mos old they can't hold it any longer than 4 - 5 hours tops...and if you sleep longer than that you need to get up in the middle of the night and let him out to potty...if you don't wanna do that than I suggest getting a play yard to confine him in at night, when you can't watch him at all times or when your gone...play yards are big enought that you can put a bed on one side and a potty pad on the other side...that gives you the freedom to sleep in with no worries of an accident to clean up...its a win win suggestion. Some yorkies are easier to train than others...Bella was over a year old before she got full run of the house not so much cause of potty accidents but she was a chewer BIG TIME LOL...Harley got full run of the house at 6 mos but I still confine him and Ivy when I know I'm gonna be gone from home longer than 4 hours...I would take your little man out every 2 hours, after eating/drinking, after playing...and the first thing you do when getting up in the morning...take him out...I take mine out before I even potty myself...I stand out there doing the potty dance thinking hurry up...lol but I know they have to go first.
