| Call me cruel. A while ago, I got a 10 week old female Yorkie puppy and named her Penelope.. She's honestly the light of our lives, but she just would not potty train! I know, I know there are a ton of posts on here with tips and suggestions about how to potty train a yorkie. Absolutely NONE of them worked. You know what did work? Rubbing her nose in her pee. Now, before you start jumping on me for doing what most of you deem to be "unacceptable", and start giving me lectures asking "would you do this to a child?". Well, no, I wouldn't..but lets face it, a dog is not a child. Love it like a child, take care of it like a child-yes. But it is not a child. Let me ask you this..would you leave your 10 week old child in a cage unattended because you have to work or you want to go see the latest movie? No, you wouldn't. You'd find a babysitter or you don't go. So before you decide to write a message on this thread, try not to be a complete hypocrite by lecturing me. I tried EVERYTHING that has been written on this post. I kept her in a small area with her crate on one side and her potty pad on the other. I cleaned up her mess without yelling at her and just kept placing her on her pad whenever she had accident. I done it all. Finally, I was at the end of my rope. I saw her squat down and pee on the floor. As she began to walk away like nothing happened I took her and dabbed her nose in the pee. I didn't squish it in the pee or press her head right into...I simply dabbed it. Next thing I know she was going to her pad and doing her business and she hasn't had one mishap sense. Every puppy is different. By all means try everything you can before doing what I done, but don't dismiss it because it's "cruel". It's not. It's teaching the puppy that doing its business on the floor/carpet is not what you want it to do. When a child does something it isn't supposed to, what do most people do? Ground him/her as a form of punishment. Well, I punished Penelope for doing her business on the floor rather then cleaning it up like nothing happened. Who knows, your puppy might respond another way. Like I said, every puppy is different. Find what works for your puppy and do it. |

| For one, I don't even know why you would post this...you have obviously found nothing on this site supporting this kind of behavior you're exhibiting. Out of how many members here & how many posts? You do a cruel thing and there's possibly a coincidence & you think you've landed on a goldmine of information? I'd hate for someone to come on here intelligently seeking info & not see a logical response to your ridiculous cure for your potty training blues. I'd love to hear what you did try, and how old your pup is. In all of your extensive research did you discover that a pup isn't even supposed to be sold at 10 weeks? Have you not seen countless times that you do not punish for the accidents but praise for what is done right? I'm also curious about how your poor little puppy made the association between being manhandled into some no doubt disgusting waste & going to her pad. I also find it to be pretty amazing that out of all of the posts I've read here, all of the books, magazines, websites, T.V. shows they all have examples of potty trained dogs & not one has made a reference to nose rubbing. Perhaps in your research you did not stumble upon the fact that toy dogs are extremely difficult to potty train, yorkies in particular, but it can be done humanely? Some catch on right away but others take many months and some are never trained at 100%. That is something that should be considered before purchase. I hope you're willing to take the time to read up on YT & that is why you joined so you may better the life of your yorkie. There is a plethora of info here on everything from diet, illness, training, pics, you name it. Hopefully you can benefit from the many experienced members here. And of course, this is my honest opinion.

| You know the least thing I want to do is hurt someones feelings or make them mad, but, you said it yourself, that was a cruel thing to do. This baby is 10wks. old!!!!! He or she should still be with their mama. I hope you start to have more compassion and understanding and most of all patience with this baby. Please don't do that again. Just remember how little and young she is. |

| It may work but why use it when if done correctly positive reinforcement works. At least that doesnt make the dog fear you

| As said previously, I too am not even sure you are real, but just in case... The pup is only 10 wks old, exactly how long could you have been potty training before you reached your exasperation point? A week or two? A 10 wk old puppy has NO ability to control its faculties - just like a 3 month old child has no ability to control its faculties! Three month old children also lack the ability to read - should we punish a 3 month old child for not catching onto reading fast enough? If you are "for real", perhaps you should read some information on the developmental stages of a puppy. They have developmental stages just like humans do. I just hope other new dog owners who come to this site for advice don't take your post to heart.

| This makes you look the fool...I have raised dozens of 10 wwk old puppies...they step in pee, sit in pee, smell pee, lay on wet pee pads..and sometimes they even poke their own nose in pee just to make sure it is pee...so now you are on the level of a 10 week old dog. |

| The puppy is too young to be away from her mother and she is also too young for you to expect her to be potty trained. I hope you wouldn't put pee on a child's nose while attempting to potty train. |

| NO! Honestly, I believe they are just trying to start trouble. BUT, for anyone else who may read this and not know- DO NOT ATTEMPT this with your pup! The only thing it might do is to teach your pup to hide their accidents from you because they will become scared of you and your reactions. No one sticks "the light of their lives" nose in pee. If it IS true- some people just should not own dogs.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Assuming this is a real post... ... I happen to agree that rubbing a dog's nose in "it" is not the same as a human's nose. We have an aversion to our waste that dogs do not share (and incidentally, human babies must be taught). Which makes the nose-rubbing technique all the more questionable - we have no idea what the dog concludes from this exercise. Presumably it's unpleasant to have the snout held to the ground. So the dog learns to associate the smell of pee (which is an unavoidable body function) with a human being angry and holding its head in an uncomfortable position. Dog: ???? Also, as others have said, it's ridiculous to assume a ten week old puppy would be potty trained in the first place.
