Call me cruel. A while ago, I got a 10 week old female Yorkie puppy and named her Penelope.. She's honestly the light of our lives, but she just would not potty train! I know, I know there are a ton of posts on here with tips and suggestions about how to potty train a yorkie. Absolutely NONE of them worked. You know what did work? Rubbing her nose in her pee. Now, before you start jumping on me for doing what most of you deem to be "unacceptable", and start giving me lectures asking "would you do this to a child?". Well, no, I wouldn't..but lets face it, a dog is not a child. Love it like a child, take care of it like a child-yes. But it is not a child. Let me ask you this..would you leave your 10 week old child in a cage unattended because you have to work or you want to go see the latest movie? No, you wouldn't. You'd find a babysitter or you don't go. So before you decide to write a message on this thread, try not to be a complete hypocrite by lecturing me.
I tried EVERYTHING that has been written on this post. I kept her in a small area with her crate on one side and her potty pad on the other. I cleaned up her mess without yelling at her and just kept placing her on her pad whenever she had accident. I done it all. Finally, I was at the end of my rope. I saw her squat down and pee on the floor. As she began to walk away like nothing happened I took her and dabbed her nose in the pee. I didn't squish it in the pee or press her head right into...I simply dabbed it. Next thing I know she was going to her pad and doing her business and she hasn't had one mishap sense.
Every puppy is different. By all means try everything you can before doing what I done, but don't dismiss it because it's "cruel". It's not. It's teaching the puppy that doing its business on the floor/carpet is not what you want it to do. When a child does something it isn't supposed to, what do most people do? Ground him/her as a form of punishment. Well, I punished Penelope for doing her business on the floor rather then cleaning it up like nothing happened. Who knows, your puppy might respond another way. Like I said, every puppy is different. Find what works for your puppy and do it. |
