| ![]() Hi, Scarlett is almost a year old. She loves to go on walks. I think we went too far yesterday because she is so tuckered out today. I was wondering how far do you walk, or how many minutes do you walk your dogs? Also I have a Puppia harness and Scarlett tends to pull some but also go from one side of the sidewalk to the other. I have trained larger dogs that I have used a chock chain and a slight pop correction to train them to walk by your side. How do you train a Yorkie? Thanks |

| ![]() I take our 8 month old Brando to the end of the street and back, about 200 yards total. Then we go out back and run laps around the backyard until I am too tired to go on. The backyard is about 100 feet long. This will usually wear him out a little bit, but not into the next day. |

| ![]() 2-3 miles 5 days a week. Approx 1 hour a day. If it's a REALLY hot and humid day, he will get tired faster. But in general, he can go for a while. He is 2.5yrs old but has been walking a lot since he was about 6 months. It's funny... he is 16lbs and his little Yorkie girlfriend Nala is only 6lbs and he got tired before her on our 2.5 mile walk at the SPCA walk for the animals, lol. That little girl can go and go and go. She walks 4-5 miles a few times a week. Being tuckered out is a GOOD thing ![]() Training... have you looked into the no pull harnesses? Premier makes them and I think Walmart sells some varieties of them.

YT Addict | ![]() @Britster, but how big is Jackson compared to the average yorkie lol he could probably do 5 miles! I love that Tikka is going to be bigger too because she LOVES walk, I've gotten her to job a couple km too! We usually walk 1-2 kilometers [half an hour or so depends on how well she walks] [2km is 1.24 miles] then stop at the park to rest and lay in the sun. We do this every other day, on the days we dont go on walks we go to the park to hang out. Tikka is about 7lbs and almost 9 months old. We worked up to the 2km though. We started at about probably .5km walks, but I realized she had way more energy than that. Just depends on how big/energetic your little one it! My pom is 5lbs and 3 years old and he will only do 1km before sitting down and demanding to be carried home lol so they go on seperate walks. Different personalities, energy levels, stamina, etc ![]()

![]() ![]() But, like I said, my friends girl Nala is 6lbs and can go all day. Sometimes even longer than Jackson! She also has 4.5lb Bandit and he can walk pretty far, too, though he tends not to be as active as Nala. Like you said, I think it's a personality thing, too more than size.

Thor's Human Donating Member | ![]() I have taken Thor on grueling 6+ mile hikes. He has never gotten too tired to walk. If I play about an hour of fetch with him, he's pooped the next day. But walking, he can do that forever.

| ![]() In the warmer weather, we walk probably 1-1/2 to 2 miles total for the day. I try to take them out at least 3-4x a day, depending on the weather, I might take them out for short breaks more often. Prior to Hot Rod's surgery 2 years ago, he and I used alternate walking and jogging about 2-3 miles a day. My guys are just about 5 lbs each.

| ![]() Thank you all for your replies. Makes me feel better about the distance we went, about 2 miles. Maybe we just need to work up to it a bit. |

| ![]() We take Jacob on probably 4 walks a day totalling 2-4 miles. He would go all day if we let him. It really messed him up early in the week when it rained. He wouldn't have anything to do with it. Our other 2 dogs had no problem walking in the rain. (Lab/shepard mix and Sheltie) I'll be anxious to see how things play out this summer. The heat will be a factor I'm sure. As far as training goes....Jacob really isn't much of a "puller" on the leash although he does have his moments. When he does pull we just stop and wait until he stops pulling, when he does we say "let's go" and continue the walk. It's working really well. Last edited by Mer; 05-04-2011 at 09:24 AM. |

| ![]() ZoE will be 21 weeks old tomorrow. We walk 1-2 miles, 3 to 4 times a week (weather permitting). We started walking outside about three weeks ago on a trail a mile from my house. She was a lil leary the first time, due to other walkers, bikers/skaters/boarders and dogs, so stayed close to my side. I kept telling her her was a good girl and good heel. She doesn't pull at all at the beginning of the walk, but does start to near the last 1/4 mile when she gets tired, and is corrected. (I think she's as anxious to get back to the car as I am by that point ![]() After her very first walk, she slept so well that night. I thought it was great & was looking forward to the same after the next walk. The next walk didn't tire her out the same way. I think she was just overwhelmed mentally as well as physically the first time, from all the new sights, smells and people we encountered. Pic is of her on the bridge we cross on the trail ![]()

| ![]() Our first walk of the day is a mile, and then we get in one or two more shorter walks. When we get back in the morning he usually lies down for a bit. |

| ![]() Wow, reading this makes me think Veruca is laaaazy. She hates walking long distances (but I make her do it anyway). When my parents were visiting they carried her places and she thinks that's waay easier. |
