| Inside or outside? I plan on potty training my puppy to go outside when I get her. I heard it is suppose to be easier to potty train in the winter b/c they do their duty and want to come right back in. Is this true? Does anyone find paper training easier/better than outside training? I do admit that I dread the thought of going outside in winter waiting for a puppy to do her business, this is the midwest after all. Even though I have a fenced in yard, I'm still going to walk her out or carry her (depending on how much snow) and try to get her to go in one certain area. So not looking forward to potty training!

| I trained a puppy in the winter and it was not easy. But I am up in Canada and it can get cold. My puppy would just cry and shiver at my feet and would forget about going pee until she was warm inside. I paper trained till it got warmer but do find once they are trained when it is cold they go much quicker and do not seem to sniff or want to play as long. Hope that helps. |

| Hi Lucy's Mom! We brought our Toto home in October, 2003 while we were working in Missouri so naturally we trained her to wee wee pads. She only weighed 1 1/2 lb. We too have a large fenced area at our home in Alabama but can't let her in there unattended because of predators. I have heard so many horror stories about them just swooping down and grabbing these little babies!! Pad training has just been wonderful for us and for her! We are in so many different places and are so particular about her being on the ground because she is so small. We are especially thankful for wee wee pads now that we are in Colorado! It is soooo cold here! Hi Breeze! Canada?!? OK ... it's really cold where you are ... I won't whine about the cold in Colorado anymore!!

| Hello Lucy's Mom!!! I bet you can't wait til you get your sweet little baby!!!! We brought Luigi home the 1st of January and we had lots of snow. We live in Ohio!!! At 1st he was afraid of the snow but he soon got over it!!! He loves the snow. We clear out a little area for him to poopoo and peepee and he went there. Then he would take a running dive into the snow piles!!! He is sooo silly!! We was trained to go out in about 2 weeks!!! He does his thing and he actually wants to play outside!!! Now we don't even clear out a spot anymore cuz even if we do he won't go there!!! He likes to clear out his own spot!!! hahaah!!! We have had a few spring fever days here also and he loves to be outside even more!!! Yes its cold, he doesn't mind it!! We just have to wipe off his popsicle legs when we come inside!!! He's so low to the ground his legs just drag thru the snow!!! So I guess my advise to you is wait and see!! Your baby may love it outside, or may hate it!!! You'll know what's right for you baby!!! |

| potty training question for new 1 1/2 pound teacup In the middle of a snow storm I acquired a one and half pound teacup that will be no more than 3 pounds at maturity. I am making my self crazy trying to figure out the best way to potty train her. Let me tell you my story and see if anyone can help. Here it goes: We currently have a beauifully outdoor trained 13 week old bigon (don't ask why I got another puppy). We trained her by way of the crate. I work all day and she is able to stay in it all day (7 to 5) with an occasional coming home to let her out. SHe sleeps in the crate and doesn't whine or have any accidents. She is out and about the rest of the time. Model dog. Now, into the picture comes a teacup 14 week old pup. We also have a few cats. Her frist days and nights I kept her in a pen or the kitchen with pads, bed, food and water. She would go on the pad several times but I also noticed that she went along the gate (proabably excitement or distress about being in there). In the kitchen her poops started on the pad but then trailed around the kitchen. I decided to go back to the crate training method last night and take her outside during the day (I am also afraid that my newly trained puppy will decide to use the pads). I had her out all day and took her outside to potty. She did fine during the day (not liking the cold though); however, last night in the crate (sectioned small already) she went poop around 11:30 pm. She was cleaned and taken out to go potty. She did. I let her out again at 3am. She went potty. But, this morning I found another poop in the crate. Am I expecting to much of a teacup? Can she hold it all night? Should I just give her a pee wee pad? The night before my daughter fell asleep with her and around 1 she was found sitting next to the pad after she had found it and went on it. I am afraid that I am going to confuse her. I would like her to ultimatley sleep with my kids. We live in a two floor house. She is funny, she does find the pad even though I keep moving it to figure out what and where is best. Help? Pads? Can they learn inside and pads at the same time? Crate at night? Day? Will she ever be able to hold it? Will pads mess up other dog? Help before I mess her up. She came knowing the pads. |
