| How do I get my Yorkie to like people? We recently rescued a beautiful little Yorkie girl, Tabitha. She's 3 years old and had previously been bred by a puppy mill in OK. While she and my son and I have bonded solidly with her from the moment we got her, she barks at anyone she sees. Does she think she's protecting us? What the best way to socialize her and have her stop barking at my neighbors? I love this baby to death, but want her to be her best. Advice?

| Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Thank you for giving Tabitha a loving home. Here is some info for you: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...nt-advice.html Time, patience, reassurance are first and foremost. Expose her to various people gradually and make everything a positive experience. Enlist friends to do training exercises that allow Tabitha to approach them on her own terms and in her own time. Have the friend stand or sit and remain still. No sudden movements or loud noises, and no staring at her. Do this outdoors on neutral territory. Praise Tabitha for any movement she makes in the direction of the person. Eventually, when she is comfortable with getting a little close to the friend, have the friend toss a really yummy treat, like a tiny piece of boiled chicken. If she takes the treat, praise her, "good girl!" Be happy, but don't scare her by exclaiming too loudly.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Maximo has some great suggestions, but Joey will bark at the neighbors, he's very protective of his yard and house. We've taught him not to bark on walks, when he sees people, but kids on skate boards still drive him nuts. When you have people over, I suggest you tell them to ignore her, and let her make the first move, this works great with Joey. Bless you for giving this little girl a loving home!

| Max barks at skateboards and bicycles. He is getting a little better with desensitization. Often the kids will leave their things at the side of the road and I tell Max to "check it out." I encourage him to sniff the bike or skateboard. The closer he gets, the more I praise him. When the kids are on the bikes or skateboards, I talk to Max like a goof, "Woowee, look at them playing!" That sort of thing seems to reassure Max that the little ones aren't out to run him over with their strange contraptions. Mainly I think he dislikes the noise of these things. With neighbors, Max barks because he wants to go greet them. That will probably never change for him.

| lol, Max isn't really a fan either, especially little girls, but this past weekend, a little girl rolled up on her "Pink Lady" bike with every colorful adornment you can imagine, and he managed to restrain himself...until the dreaded hand started moving toward him to pat his head. Then he let out a couple barks. Teddy hid behind my legs. Yorkieladynh, hope this makes you laugh and that it doesn't scare you. Nancy's Joey and my boys are well behaved, but they have their little quirks.

| Thanks everyone! I'll continue to be patient and help encourage her to learn some new and better habits.
