Default Sign Language??

I am deaf myself and when we first got Macy for my birthday. She was 7 weeks old. I started teaching her sign language right away and she got up on it so fast. The signs she knows now are:

Eat
More
Jump
Bark
Sit
Light
Treats
Walk
Outside
Potty
Bed/Sleep

I taught her how to lick my fingers while me doing the I Love You sign.

Do you teach your Yorkies/other dogs sign language if you know any??

What a smart baby! I want to learn sign language. Kaji knows to be quiet if I hold my index finger up to my lip. He knows to calm down if I shake my head. He's just really good about reading body language.

My sister is an interpreter for the deaf, and she taught my nieces sign language when they were young. They learned to sign before they could talk. I think it's a great idea to teach it to our dogs.

I was watching something about that on T.V. I think that is fabulous what you are doing with him. Keep up the good work!

That's amazing! I learned the basics when my sister was hit by a car and now I teach that to my nephew. He is actually getting therapy to help him with it now because he has a hard time with speech development. It's great that your puppy can pick up on it! I use hand gestures with London while I say a command but that's it.

Our dog trainer had a dog who suddenly went deaf at age 12. The dog was very well trained with hand signals before but the trainer added some signs for further communication and the dog picked it up very fast. It was very impressive.

I do not know sign language but do use signals with my 2. They know stay, down, come, watch me, touch. I can also tilt my head to say "let's go" .

I taught my cocker spaniel sign language when she was young. She is 12 years old now and is going deaf. It helps a ton that she knows it already so she isn't being affected a lot by going deaf.

She knows....

Sit
Come
Stay
Down
Stand
Heel
Rollover
Shake
Take a bow (this is everyone's favorite trick)
Take (she can take any item that she can pick up in her mouth and I can also sign to her which direction I want her to go)

I've never thought of one for going potty. What do you do for that?

My border collie also knows some sign language and I am teaching my yorkiepoo as well.

For potty sign... when Macy was a puppy, everytime she went in the house, I would stop her immediately and take her outside and sign potty. She would look at me every time I signed potty. Next time whenever she looked like she had to go in the house, I would sign no and then sign potty. She would go right to the door and go outside. Ever since she knows the potty sign.

I'm sorry about your cocker spaniel. We questioned how much Ashley was hearing, but we were still whispering a lot when she was sleeping peacefully in case we would wake her. We're not sure if it was her dementia or her hearing, but she sometimes didn't respond. She was almost seventeen when she died, so I'm sure her hearing was affected somewhat. She still cocked her head when she could see us talking to her. I don't know why we didn't think of sign language. My nieces learned so quickly when they were little. For preschool, my sister "mainstreamed" them with deaf children. They already knew how to sign, and the school wanted it to be an inclusive experience for the deaf children. It was a wonderful experience for my nieces; they learned so much about individual needs at a very young age. I think when we bring new little ones into our lives, I will teach them some signs. The babies will learn more quickly if we do both, and it's good to think ahead to old age. I wish my sister and my nieces didn't live so far away for this and many other reasons.

I don't know sign language, but Levi does know several hand signals for basic commands. I love the idea of teaching signs to dogs.

I would love to learn sign language for those commands. You all put me to shame, because I was so proud of myself for teaching my lil girl to come follow me just by waving my hand in a "come on" signal. Now you've given me some ideas! I think it is so wonderful that you've taught Macy those signs. They are very smart! Congratulations.

That's amazing! I've always wanted to learn sign language. I will finally be able to take that class next semester and I'm super excited. I've never thought to teach it to Stormy, but what a fabulous idea! Do you guys happen to know of a website where I can learn the basic commands like sit and so forth in the meantime?

I am sorry I read your question wrong. The sign for potty is fingerspell the letter "T" in sign and shake it. I posted the website of ABCs and signs below.
