How long... potty trained?

My puppy Bella is almost 4 months old, i've been potty training her for the past month and most of the time she gets it right but at least once a day she pees somewhere other than where shes supposed to,

When she has accidents i've put her in the crate sicne she hates it in there, my parents scream at her, ive put her nose near the pee and then take her to the newspaper so she knows where shes supposed to etc. i think she knows shes just being hardheaded?

how long did it take your puppies to finally get it right accident-free ?

Hi and welcome to YT. You will learn a lot on here - just like I did. Well, for one - you are not suppose to yell at them and you are not suppose to put their nose in it. There is this great website that gives a lot of terrific and valuable information as how to housebreak. It is: www.thehousebreakingbible.com. At 4 months, she is now beginning to be able to have control of her bladder. My yorkie was 8 months old before she was 100% paper trained. She is fantastic and does not have any accidents - and my house is very large - but she still knows where she is suppose to go. Good luck to you.

My Max will be 4 months old tomorrow and we are still working on it. I work from home so I thought it would be easy. There are times when I take him outside and when he potties on the grass he runs over to me because he knows he did so well! He's waiting for praise.

But, he still potties all over the house. I'm starting to think he's understanding he needs to potty outside, but he's making ZERO effort to let me know. There are times also when I bring him outside to potty and as soon as we come in the house he goes on the carpet.

I'm also bell training him and this morning he slammed on the bell for the first time. I let him out and nothing.

I don't believe that yelling him or punishing him, by crating, will work. You just have to be very patient, and take him out every hour (if possible). PLUS, 4 months is too young to expect them to be fully trained. Patience and lots of praise and love usually does the trick. I know it is very hard and time consuming but once they get the hang of it, you'll be done. Also, try to stay in the same room with the pup at all times. I did have luck writing the time my pup urinated and have a BM for a few days,and once the routine was established I was able to catch him in time to bring him outside. Worked. Best of luck

13 years so far with Maxine....she is trained, and she will let you know if she has to go out. If you miss her signal, she will trot into the rooms with the nice wool carpets and have at it! She has ruined some very nice rugs, but she is worth it! Thank God the big dog has more control! He has had one accident in the house, and that was right after his cancer surgery when he was on 80mg of Prednisone a day and drinking buckets of water.

Yorkies are difficult to 100% house train. Wonder why when we carry them around and out?

We got Daisy from the breeder when she was 16 weeks. The breeder told us about puppy pads. She was trained in about 2 weeks. I couldn't believe how quickly she got it. Now we did use the disposable ones that have a scent to attract. After she got it, knock wood, we haven't had an accident. She is now 2 1/2 yrs old. Try it. I was skeptical but now I am a believer.

Jackson was fairly easy. I mean, he will still have a very occasional accident but I would say it's once every few months and it's always poop on a rainy day or when weather is bad, and it's usually my fault cuz I wasn't paying attention. Come to think of it, he hasn't had a poop accident in months. He will be 2 in October and he's been 99percent potty trained since 5 months old.

I've never had a yorkie that was potty trained before 6 months of age. A breeder told me once that they can't control their muscles until 6 months of age, and I did notice a change around that time. Also, my males were neutered at 6 mos., so that may have helped too. All of mine, past and present, took at least until 9 months old to be fully trained.

And I agree that you shouldn't yell at a puppy. My favorite method is to praise like crazy (and give treats) when they go where you want them to. And when they have an accident, I don't say anything. Just clean it up and don't scold. They want to be praised, and eventually they get it. Of course, if you can't watch the puppy every moment, you need to either crate her or restrict her to a small space. And I took them out every hour no matter what (or put them on a weewee pad). Eventually, they figure it out, but it takes lots of time and patience.

Don't yell at her and don't put her nose in the puddle. Take her outside on a regular schedule.
Merlin is 6 month now and mostly accident free. He will either bark if I'm not in the same room or gets restless and I know he needs to go outside.
Have patience, it will come. But I really believe in structure. My daughter and her husband came over from Germany for 3 weeks and we were a bit lax with Merlin and that was when he had accidents in the house. As soon as life was back to normal he was good as gold.
