| He won't stop ringing the bell HELP! We have successfully trained our 4 month old Bentley to ring the "tell bell" when he needs to go outside. It took about 2 weeks but he started ringing it to go out and we're past 30 days of no accidents inside. This is great. However. he rings that bell every hour to half hour!! We don't know what to do. We don't want to think the bell is a bad thing (so don't want to scold) and we don't want him to regress and start going inside by us ignoring him. I've been told puppies can hold it at least 4 hours - so Im thinking of ignoring him - honestly he will go out and pee and come in and ring it in 15 minutes. We do live in a busy apartment complex so I realize often it's a cat or a car he sees, but along with the ringing he has started barking if he is ignored for too long or just keeps angrily stomping on the bell repeatedly. Anybody else had this problem or anyone have any suggestions?? Thank you |

| Oh my... Yorkies are so funny at times aren't they... Harley got smart like this when he was in his crate. he'd wimper once to get out in the mornings. That would be when I'd let him out... Well a few times at night he hadn't gone to the bathroom before bed, and started to wimper... so I checked his toilet, sure enough it was dry so I'd let him out, he'd pee and I'd praise, and then back to bed for him... Well a few nights later... he whimpered i did the same thing, and the little runt ran out of his crate, grabbed his toys and started a chase game all over the house... needless to say there was no bathroom break involved that night or the three consecutive nights this happened. He caught on that the whimper which he used to only do once or twice a day, could be turned into play time. We started ignoring him at night. He's old enough (9 months) that unless his stomach is upset he can hold the whole night. He actually doesn't wake me up in the mornings either which is a blessing, cause for a while there, he would wake us up at 6am to go out. It's really hard to tell what to do with him, whether you should ignore him or not. Is he peeing every time he goes outside, even when it's 15 min after the first pee? I'm interested to see what everyone has to say about this. Good luck! |

| well he's smart enough to realize I will bring him back in if he doesn't go potty after so long so he'll hike his leg and force a tiny dribble out while looking at the people or dogs he wanted out to see. I'm just afraid of him thinking the bell doesn't mean outside but I'm tired of being a doorman! Lol. I'm hoping somebody has some experience or advice. Thank you |

So here is what we did. After he had been out to potty, we lifted up the doorbell so he couldn't reach it, and it stayed up for 2-3 hours, we put in back down, hopefully when he was out of sight of the bell, and then the next time he rang it we let him out, he peed pooed whatever, in he comes up comes the bell. That went on for a week or so, and now the doorbell stays down

The tricky part is knowing when he rings the bell to potty. I believe at this point (we've had the bell for a year and half) I know when it's to potty. If I don't let him out after he rings it angrily, he will just go and lay down. Sometimes, I'll just say "Cooper, no you already went potty". And of course, the one time I timed it wrong he just stood there and peed on the carpet in front of me. I'm hoping others can offer you some expertise. Perhaps when he rings it and you take him out to potty, and he potties successfully, you may want to reward that with a treat. These dogs are master manipulators. Last time I had Cooper kenneled, I brought his bell and told them that he would ring it when he needs to go potty. Well, you can imagine what happened He slammed it all day long just to get attention. Now that I think about this, I'm a doorman.

| Dogboots - glad I'm not the only one we live in an apartment complex so we can't just openthe door and let him ou we have to leash him, get shoes on, and walk him off our patio into the grass and the problem is were against where cars park and other people are. So Alot of times he sees someone or something and so we have to drag him in because forget pottying then.in the fall I go back to nursing school for my final yer while my boyfriend works days and I work nights so we can't spend our time being his doorman lol. We play with him and he gets plenty of attention and usually a good walk at least once a day so it's gettig very frustrating. I think I'll start hidig the bell after he goes luckily he poops the same time every day just about it's the peeing we can't exactly time. |

The good news is you can travel with your dog and the bell. You can bring it to family, friends, etc - no more accidents anywhere, ever. And, other people think it's so adorable, but they just don't know we are doormen.

| We have our two yorkies bell trained and had this problem a while back. I live in a house and Buster & Bailey go potty out in the backyard, so it's a little different than your situation in an apartment, but I'm guessing the problem is the same - whenever they wanted to go see a bird, squirrel, other dog, kids, etc, they would bonk the bell to go outside. We go for walks and car rides out the front & garage door so their bell is only on the back door where they go potty. I paid a lot of attention to their body language. If they just went out, I would say, "no you just went out, come here" and distract them with a toy, or a snuggle on the couch or something. If they ever looked at their butt (I know!) or just laid or sat down by the door, those were signs that they needed to go potty. Now we're back to them just bonking the bell if they need to go potty. I also learned to NOT force them to come back in, because one time I thought they were done going potty but Bailey just hadn't found her "spot" yet and I made her come in the house & she pooped inside (shame on me!). It takes time to figure them out but you can do it and have some success. Not sure if this helps, but good luck with your training!

| I am so glad harley is grid trained... I'm only the doorman in the morning... opening his crate. His toilet is in the middle of his room, and he now knows that he can go find it, even if we're in the livingroom. I must say, these dogs are WAY too smart sometimes. |

No Longer a Member | this was too cute a post...sorry, but I do hope that the advice given will help you out. This is why I was wary about starting Rizzo on the tell bell, he already knows that all he has to do is start sniffing around on the floor and I'll hurry up and take him out. So he does that whenever he wants to go play and I'm doing something else...these guys really are too smart :P Good luck! |

| Ok! So I have only been on here a few days, but this is by far the funniest/most informative post I have read. Obviously my blind Yorkie can't do this and my 10 yr old Yorkie would probably think I am crazy....but I definitely plan to do this with my next Yorkie! How do you do it? Do you just ring the bell everytime you take them out and praise them when they potty? Some are so hard to house train that I can't believe so many have had luck with the bell!
