| Neutering will not make him more sad or depressed. To the contrary, neutering is more likely to make him less anxious. An intact male usually has a desire to get out and roam to search for a female. To help your dog with separation anxiety, provide plenty of distractions when you are away: toys, safe treats, perhaps television or radio. Do some training exercises where you use keywords or phrases as cues that you are leaving, but you will return. Leave for only a few minutes the first time and gradually increase the amount of time you are gone after each departure. When you leave and return, don't make a big deal out of it. Be calm and relaxed and your dog will eventually follow your lead. If you are anxious or nervous, your dog will pick up on it and mirror your feelings. If you can, try walking or playing fetch to wear out the dog before you have to depart. He might still make a fuss when you leave, but he will have less energy to keep it up once you are gone. |

| Kobe has separation anxiety, not as bad as he did before. But exercise is always a big help, when he's tired he barks less and just lays down after a few minutes. He also has interactive toys that keep him busy for hours. His favorite is a ball with a small hole it and he has to push it around to get them out... well this works WONDERS for me. I put it down right before i leave the house and he doesn't really pay attention to me leaving.

| A few weeks ago I did the what Maximo suggested...I say "I'll be back" as my key phrase--then I walked out and shut the door (leaving a window open so I could hear, but he could not see me), I stayed out for a minute or two, and when he was silent I came back in. I repeated that several times , increasing the time I was gone to about 15 mins. Only coming back inside when he was silent so he associated my return with silence not crying. Now he's usually calm when I leave. If he is crying when I leave, it only lasts a few seconds then he stops. Last edited by Dany001; 06-28-2010 at 06:27 PM. |

We are working on this with our Dharma. How old was your dog when you were practicing this? Dharma is 14 weeks old and she has been home for a week and a half. She poops in her crate every time we leave so we're trying to work on getting her more comfortable when we leave. I was just wondering if she is too young, or if she has been here too little to feel comfortable enough when we leave. As I said in another post, we leave her in her crate with toys and the radio on. We only leave her for an hour tops!

| He's 14 weeks right now.... I did this with him about 2 or 3 weeks ago, so he was 11/12 weeks at the time. I keep him in a play pen that had pads on one side and his bed on the other, so he walks over to the Pad side when he has to go (when he's out he's confined to our living room, that has one pad and he goes to it if he has to go). |
