Dinky is confused and so am I Okay, so the breeder trained to go in the crate, obviously. She said she used puppy pads, but he goes on his blanket. I He sniffe the puppy pad once and now never even looks at it. So I started to take him out and when I bring him in, he hops in the crate and goes on the blanket. I left it without a blanket yesterday, and he did pee outside 2 times. He did not really know what he was doing, but I acted all happy and praised him profusely. I did pot a towel in there before night time. Then he hopped in and happily peed. Dinky completey ignores the pee pad. He sniffed it once and then hasn't looked at it since. He is 4 and a half months old. It feels unkind to leave him without a blanket at night, but that seems to be the obvious thing to do. And since he likes to pee on bedding, well no way he's sleeping in my bed for now! He is very timid. He doesn't bark much. He won't walk, but is making some progress. What to do with a dog who was trained to do it wrong?

Pad training Apparently Dinky isn't pad trained. The key to this, is to learn when Dinky is ready to go. Observe carefully after he eats or drinks and for the next half hour is the time. When you see him sniffing around it's the time to put him on the pad and stay with him until he relives himself. Then praise him. This way he will understand that this is the place to go. Also don't feed or water him about one or two hours before bed time. And of course be very patient. I trained both my puppies this way and now they look for the pad even if we go to the Park! Don't loose faith in your puppy, it will take some time but he will get it right. Hope I helped. Maria

Hi! I am going through the same issue here with my 5mo Zeus. Even though he doesn't pee or poop his bed, he only will poop in his crate. I am taking him out constantly and he does pee but I don't think it has hit him yet that he is doing the right thing. I praise him every time he goes... I don't want to use a puppy pad because I want him to understand that the only place where he can do his business is outside. I am probably taking the steepest and bumpiest road on potty training but only hoping he will get it soon Good luck to both of us! ~Michelle

Thanks for support and advice. We've gone back to basics too since he was not trained well. We've blocked off the kitchen and are retraining him to the crate. I was stressed from trying to keep him from peeing on my carpeting, which he did sort of mindlessly. So I'm more relaxed. He really can't concentrate on anything besides wanting to be with me. So we are working on calming him down. He is stressed from losing his mom, litter mate etc. He is in his crate right now, has peed on his pad...hurrah. We've decided to go just with pee pad for now. He's just starting to like the outdoors and I am going to work on walking out there. It's actually quite a walk from our kitchen, through the garage to the designated area, so he's pretty much forgotten anything that happened by the time we get him there. It feels good to blather on about him. He is adorable by the way! I'll post his pic here once I figure out how to do it.

Thing are going well with the Dinkster Well, Dinky is using his pee pads outdoors! I am thrilled. Going back to basics was He did pee once on the placemat where we had his food and water. That was an honest mistake on his part. We're still taking him out constantly, but at least it's paying off. He is becoming more confident too. I was really starting to worry that he was going to have serious shyness problems, but he seems better every day.

Forget the Pee Pads! Pee pads were too ccnfusing. Whe's making good progress, and basically gets that he is supposed to do this outside. Then last night, I tossed in a little flannel blanket so he could curl up and he did 1 and 2 on it before leaving crate in am. He had gone all night for two nights with just a little bed in there, but the blanket confused him again. So another day of basic crate training. I'm sure he'll get back on track. Training a yorkie is not for the faint of heart!
