| need help on what to do with potty train. PLZ hi all i dont have a my yorki yet but i liek to know these things before i get one. I have read in many places about a CRATE. how does this work? how big? where i put her toys, water?food? etc.. how many hours to crate? how much space to give a pup? how many times a day to feed and take out? times best? I want the pup to learn to go outside. I have a back patio and im thinkink maybe train her to ring the door bell and she will go outside where there will be a little box? or maybe a pan with peepad or newpaper. The patio door is in the kitchen to go to the back yard has stairs to go down to the grass. But im thinking that i want to her to start to go just to the patio so when i open the kitchen door she can go there. The patio is a closed area and then u have to open the other door if i want to go to the yard. It hink traning her to pee there is good so in the winter time there will be lots of SNOW in the yard. but if i do take her out for a walk would that make her mix up? what should i do? Im clueless What did you guys do to potty train your yorki? |

| Hi, I got my Yorkie about 6 wks. ago, he was 4 mos. old and he is pretty much housebroken. Plus, we had 3 weeks with that Guardia which was a mess, so he did as best as we would ever have hoped for. I took him out where I knew another dog had peed and he picked up the scent. He immediately went and he got a treat and I made it an event. I have a son at home so this dog is out every few hours. As to poop, that was a mess. For a while he was walked, did nothing and then came in and did it. I put it outside and showed him, over and over. He finally got it. As to confining the dog, you can only put a dog in a crate for I heard, 4 hours. This dog was not confined at the breeders and the crate was out. I used an xpen, made it very small. If I'm going to be gone more than a few hours, I do put food and water in small bowls in there. I also put his toys in there and a thick towel over the bed in case of an accident. I do not think the patio will work too well. The dog needs to be walked, praised and pick up the scent. Maybe later. I think if you are really consistent and get a good dog from a good breeder, this should not be a big deal. I had heard how hard it was with Yorkies, bit to be honest, it turned out much easier than I expected. Good luck. |

| I have 2 little dogs. One a yorkie . I use pee pads , and place several down . They use them with accuracy. Your pup will choose a place she likes to use the potty, then place pee pads there . Their is a special scent on the pads that helps the pup use the pads . I would not train outside first , because your baby needs to be fully vaccinated before going outdoors .

| You need to ask the vet about vacinations. My dog had all of the puppy shots and within a week, all vacinations. If the dog is very young, the I think house breaking takes longer. Although 15 years ago I had a tiny Maltese that was only about 9 weeks old when I got her. I had a trainer come in. I was using newspapers and she told me to get rid of them and get the dog out, even the patio was better than what I was doing. I tooks her out sans all the shots and didn't think about it. She was housebroken. It took a while. Ask your vet. This time I purposely got a dog 17 weeks old, on solid food, ready to go out. I just don't want the dog going in the house and then retraining the dog to go out. FYI, the scent this dog picked up was on my front lawn from the Maltese who died at 15 years of age. I took care of her sick for months. She left a gift to my new puppy. Also, I free feed my dogs which I hear is a big no no but has always worked for me. |

| Awe - you have lots of questions and you're at the right place. I'd like to suggest Housetraining for Dummies and Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies - two very good basic books that will give you a great head start. I modified the potty training method - in that instead of taking out the dog every so often, I chose to supervise and then correct potty accidents. As I corrected potty accidents - I said "outside", scooped her up, took her paw to a service bell (door bell) and went outside. Then I said "go potty" and praised/treated when she was successful. I wanted Bailey to train bailey to let me know when she needs to go outside (instead of me being trained to take her out ) Bailey was in the house with us supervised at all times. I only used a crate for short periods of time when I could not supervise (she hated the crate). While at work, Bailey was safe and secure in an exercise pen (4x4x36"). Good luck and welcome to YT!!
