Awe - you have lots of questions and you're at the right place. I'd like to suggest Housetraining for Dummies and Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies - two very good basic books that will give you a great head start.
I modified the potty training method - in that instead of taking out the dog every so often, I chose to supervise and then correct potty accidents. As I corrected potty accidents - I said "outside", scooped her up, took her paw to a service bell (door bell) and went outside. Then I said "go potty" and praised/treated when she was successful. I wanted Bailey to train bailey to let me know when she needs to go outside (instead of me being trained to take her out

)
Bailey was in the house with us supervised at all times. I only used a crate for short periods of time when I could not supervise (she hated the crate). While at work, Bailey was safe and secure in an exercise pen (4x4x36").
Good luck and welcome to YT!!
