| new yorkie causing horrible stress in my cat since I brought home my yorkie puppy the end of July my poor cat has been sick with bouts of blood in his urine. I have had him at the vet 3 times & he went back in yesterday. vet just called, did blood work, xrays etc. & can't find anything wrong. he has been on antibiotics twice (10 days & then for 16 days) & things clear up for 2 or 3 days & it is right back again. so the vet has come to the conclusion that my cat just hates my new puppy (since this started about a month after I got him) I knew the day I brought my yorkie home the cat hated him, but I assumed he would get use to him. NO WAY! HE JUST WANTS THAT YORKIE GONE! The cat sees this as an upset in his world & just doesn't want him here. He is suffering from Depression & Stress. So now I have to put my cat on "anti-anxiety" medicine. Boy, these pets! It is like the way some little skin kids get jealous over Mommy bringing home a new baby! |

| awh... thats a cute story (not your cat being sick, but the way you told it) I had a friend of mine push the cat in a stroller while she walked her dog, and they started to get along. (she didn't have a yorkie though) |

| When I brought home Chipper we had a 10 year old cat. This cat was huge and weighed about 15lbs and was totally afraid of my 2lb yorkie puppy. The cat spent the first week under the covers of our bed. I had to lure the cat out of the bed and then fed him under the bed. Chipper was confined to the kitchen and was in his crate at night so it wasn't as if the puppy was in the cats personal space. The second week the cat stayed under the bed and by week 3 started to walk around the house and tried to ignore Chipper. After a couple of months the two of them became great friends. Hopefully your cat will someday realize that your yorkie is here to stay and life can go on.

| Sorry to hear about your kitty. We have one that really doesn't like changes/new things. Make sure your cat has a place that the yorkie can't go to, a sancuary of sorts. This spot should be where the cat feels it's "territory" in the house is. Ours is particularly fond of the office and the bedroom, so we kept new members of the family out until she adjusted. Good luck! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Aw, your poor kitty . What bloodwork was done? Also, did they do a urinalysis? Was a UTI ruled out and were stones ruled out? When we got Wylie, I also had my beloved cat, Einstein - who lived to be 20 years old. Wylie bugged the crap out of her, bc he was a puppy - and puppies don't really know any better (unless taught) bc they kinda think everyone is their littermate. We taught Wylie the command "Leave it" - which means - "leave it alone" - "it" being anything you need it to be. We felt we had to step in for Einstein bc Wylie wouldn't back off (being a puppy) and she wasn't very assertive bc she was a senior kitty and her vision was not great. While dogs have a way of working things out (to an extent) amongst themselves in terms of pecking order - I do see a place for intervening when it comes to cats and dogs etcetera, bc dogs and cats have different ways of communicating. Maybe check out our Training Section and see if there is a thread on the Leave It command...or something similar...? Or a trainer may have a good way of explaining it here...

| yes they checked his urine & did blood work. they say it is stress induced & that is why it keeps coming back. the cat is 8 yrs. old I do make the puppy leave him alone, don't let him chase him & stuff. one time the cat grabbed him & bit him, so he pretty much learned his lesson. And Dezi does understand the "no" command. hopefully once spring arrives & the cat can go back outside sometimes on his harness & leash he will feel better. |

| Oh well, I hate to hear that about kitty! I hope the anxiety meds help her! Maybe they'll even turn her attitude around about puppy! My puppy loves my cat too...and she does him...he sees her as is friend to play with when mom's arm gets tired from playing tug of war! Let us know if kitty gets better with the meds!
