| Potty training to go indoors AND outdoors? Bad idea? I am still potty training my puppy (6 month old). He seems to be doing pretty good and goes on his litter box with occasional accidents. I mainly trained him to use a litter box because I wanted him to be able to go on it as a back up, when he can't wait until I get home, or during the night time. Also, where I live our temperatures get to -35C in the winter and the poor guy gets very cold. I would prefer him to go less inside and more outside, but to still have an option of using a litter box under certain circumstances. I would especially like him to learn to go outside when his litter box is not around, like when we are visiting friends in their home for example. Do you think that it is possible to double train him, or is it only going to get him confused and cause more issues? I read conflicting information on this and wanted to see if anyone was successful in training their yorkie to go mostly outside, but occasionally use a litter box as well??? |

| I am in the Great White North as well. I have double trained my kids. Mostly outside, but access to the pads (2 will only use newspaper) It is important that they can tell you "OUT", so bell train, and you should be able to have it both ways. good luck

Thor's Human Donating Member | My impression is that it is harder for dogs to learn both, but Thor has it down, and it's really nice to have all the options. Also, I just have to stick this brag in here: Thor now poops on command! I tell him "Potty" for pee, and "BM" for poop. It's a load off (hee!), because he would sometimes go in a random spot when I took him to the office (which I suppose is an argument against training them to go indoors and outdoors). Anyway, now I just tell him to go before we go into the office, he gets a big treat, and everyone is happy. I also wanted to say - reading back on these potty training threads, I remember how long and hard the slog was to get Thor potty trained. I sometimes honestly thought he would never get it. And it is soooooooooo nice to be on the other side of that mountain. Don't give up. Last edited by QuickSilver; 01-28-2010 at 10:14 AM. |

| Thanks for your replies! It is encouraging to know that there is hope. Did you train your babies to potty inside and outside simultaneously, (if so, how?) or did you first train them to go outdoors and than once they got the idea, you trained them to potty indoors as well? I am trying to figure out how to go about training Bailey. For example if he has an accident in the house should I be rushing him to his litter box or outside? I will try using a bell, and see if I can teach him to "pee" and "poop" on command. It's gotten REALLY cold here, I tried to get him to go outside last night, but with no luck. Poor guy flipped on his side so his paws won't touch the ground because they were so cold. I tried dog boots, but he doesn't like the idea either. Last edited by anko; 01-28-2010 at 10:42 AM. |

| Poop and pee on command IS THE KEY .... for sure, mine do both at "pp time" During an accident, I'd go for the box, less traumatic! If you see circling, ask "OUT??" and ring the bell, and head for the door!

| Uni does both. We trained inside first. She is kind of a special case, b/c when we got her, we had our house, our shop, then bf's mom's house on the weekends. So i thought it would be confusing for her, but somehow she got it. She was trained to go on the pads in the bathrooms. she had a pad/box in each of the bathrooms. when we got home, she would pee downstairs, then race upstairs to go poop. At the shop she has one box, and at bf's mom's she has one pad down and one up stairs. Once she got that, then everything changed! We lost the house, moved back in with MIL, and she decided she didn't want the pad in the bathroom anymore, so we moved it into the sunroom. At first she was still going in the bathroom, so we had to retrain her to do in in the new spot. Not too bad. Now we are taking her for more walks so we use less pads. Trust me it is easier to inside train first, then take them for walks, b/c they will learn themselves that they can go anywhere they want outside. They love going outside, so they will start to hold it, just so they can go outside! but it's not impossible to train outside first then in, but I think this way is easier. Anyway, it's so frikkin cold where you are, why would you even want to go outside?
