Default Potty training to go indoors AND outdoors? Bad idea?

I am still potty training my puppy (6 month old). He seems to be doing pretty good and goes on his litter box with occasional accidents.

I mainly trained him to use a litter box because I wanted him to be able to go on it as a back up, when he can't wait until I get home, or during the night time. Also, where I live our temperatures get to -35C in the winter and the poor guy gets very cold.

I would prefer him to go less inside and more outside, but to still have an option of using a litter box under certain circumstances.

I would especially like him to learn to go outside when his litter box is not around, like when we are visiting friends in their home for example.

Do you think that it is possible to double train him, or is it only going to get him confused and cause more issues?

I read conflicting information on this and wanted to see if anyone was successful in training their yorkie to go mostly outside, but occasionally use a litter box as well???
