Train dog not to chase cars? Help!

Thanks Jeannie and everyone else with the positive input...I already have Nigels commands down..he knows how to sit, lay down, come, rollover, jump up. Still working on stay though. I truely agree they are too unpredictable to be off a leash running free. He usually wants to stay by our side though. Not worth the risk. This question was not asked so much for Nigel but just for any dog. That show I watched I remembered her training some dog for that but couldnt remember the details. I was just curious. It was called "It's Me or the Dog" with the trainer Victoria ? I can't remember her last name. She is really fun to watch and learn things from. Thanks again!

Pixie is always on a harness and leash. But, when we take her for a walk she goes nuts when a car goes by. We have to pick her up to stop her from barking. Don't know how to break her of it.

One thing we have done is to take her were she can't see any cars and she is fine. But, if you are on the sidewalk and one goes by...Look OUT.

When I walk Bonnie (we live out in the sticks, so we walk in the road, no sidewalks) and a car is coming, I say "Bonnie a car is coming" and we move to the side of the road and watch the car go by.
If she even acts like she wants to run after the car I repremand her with a sharp "NO" and a gentle tweek on her leash (attached to her harness).
I would never let her loose, but I hope that if she ever does escape, she will know to get out of the road....May be wishful thinking.

I actually think this is a very good question. When Winston and I go for a walk, he is told to sit and wait at each and every corner, car or no car, when I say OK and start walking across the street, he follows. I would never intentionally allow Winston to run free without a leash, but you never know, maybe a door or gate was left open accidentally...he has to know to sit and wait for me to get him and not run into the street...no chasing allowed with me, the more you chase them, the more they run.
Any other useful suggestions?

Hopefully your Yorkie won't get out without a leash. I never let mine out without one and somehow I guess my door wasn't closed good or we didn't see him slip out but he got hit by a car and killed 2 days age and I can't stop crying. My answer is they can't be trusted to know cars are dangerous .

Love that show and yes, I think it's a great question. Accidents happen. If Sydney had a chance, she would be out the front door if I didn't hold her, and we live on a busy street. Any ideas would be great.

I hate to say this but I don't think even a well trained yorkie can be trusted.
They are so headstrong, and they want what they want -NOW!

I have no idea how to train a yorkie like that, but I have learned an emergency action that has actually saved Gizmo's life! Thank you YT! (This is where I learned it and it is worth repeating.)

If your dog accidentally gets free and starts running toward the street, run AWAY from your dog!!

I found out that it really does work! Gizmo thought it was a game and started chasing me while I ran away from the street.

I ran past my son while Gizmo was chasing me, and my son scooped him up. My heart just about stopped!
